Social Influences Social life and fashion was greatly improved in the 1920s. There were new forms of entertainment including radio, crosswords, jazz, dance, etc. World War I gave women a sense that they could do anything a man could, including smoking and drinking. The women who smoked, drunk, and lived a fast-paced reckless life were referred to as flappers.
