The More You Go - The More You Know You Need to Know Post-Secondary School (College/Universities) have significant differences, for example some hire many advisors and counsellors and create a comprehensive support system while other’s offer little in the way of student support. Think of Colleges and Universities as shoe stores - they may have what you want but is the fit correct? You only know if you Go - to open houses, tours, student for a day, art exhibits and information fairs. Sign up for the Career Remind 101 or check out www.careerwiki.weebly.com or follow your school's recruiters for events. You should go!

Differences Between College and University trains people in a field of work and develops workplace skills disciplines within the school are often not connected so a student who switches from Geomatics to Criminal Justice will not likely receive transfer credit students would normally be committed to a field of work before attending (General Studies and College Prep are exceptions) often require a specific high school course(s) or two for admission University explores different ways of looking at real life - for example, students may learn to understand our world from a Sociological, Economic and Statistical point of view after Point of View learning, students develop workplace skills you can transfer between disciplines, majors and minors admission usually requires Eng 30-1 and 3 or 4 other 30 level academic courses

Admission at University Competitive Entrance: Applicants are ranked by their High School average and the highest averages gain acceptance, (UofC and UofA) Standardized Admission Average: Students are accepted as long as they meet the minimum entrance requirements and average, (UofL, Kings). To Do Identify at least 2 schools you want to attend. Look at at least 4 related programs in each school Complete the Fit You Best Notepad on the previous pages Go to an Open House or Information Event Notes

Admission Early Bird Check List Identify Early Admission Deadlines - there can be advantages to both scholarships and admission if you apply before this deadline Match Courses - your planned high school courses should match the courses required for admission - if they do not match see your advisory teacher Match Averages - will you meet the expected admission average or standard admission average? - if it does not match see the career counsellor for advice Admission Extras- some programs require portfolios, auditions, interviews or reports - evaluate what you will need. Where Will You Live? - will you apply for on campus housing and when should you apply? Record Everything in Best Fit Notepad on page 3 and 4

What If You Don’t Know What to Study? This question is more urgent if you are going to college as you learn job specific skills and less urgent at university where you get to take many transferable courses your first year. But if you would like more direction you can… Make an appointment with Garth where you can take advantage of career assessments or do some planning specific to your needs OR The U of L, Lethbridge College and Medicine Hat College all have career counsellors or assessment programs you can access Training Inc in Lethbridge has qualified Career Counsellors
