MATH TERMS Terms we need to know!

Why is it important to know? These are universal terms that are used in all textbooks and around the world. Many issues that students have with understanding math concepts is not knowing the important math terms math terms Knowing and understanding math terms is the first step in being better at solving word problems.

Term 1 - SUM A sum is a result of adding two or more numbers.

Term 2 – Product The answer when two or more numbers are multiplied together.

Term 3 - Difference The result of subtracting one number from another. How much one number differs from another. Example: The difference between 8 and 3 is 5.

Term 4 - Quotient The answer after you divide one number by another dividend ÷ divisor = quotient Example: in 12 ÷ 3 = 4, 4 is the quotient 12 Chocolates 12 Chocolates Divided by 3

Term 5 – Exponent The exponent of a number says how many times to use that number in a multiplication. It is written as a small number to the right and above the base number. In this example: 82 = 8 × 8 = 64 (The exponent "2" says to use the 8 two times in a multiplication.) Other names for exponent are index or power.

Term 6 – Integers Integers are like whole numbers, but they also include negative numbers ... but still no fractions allowed! So, integers can be negative {-1, -2,-3, -4, -5}, positive {1, 2, 3, 4, 5, … }, or zero {0} We can put that all together like this: Integers = { ..., -5, -4, -3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5}

Term 7 – Factor Factors are numbers you can multiply together to get another number: Example: 2 and 3 are factors of 6, because 2 × 3 = 6. A number can have MANY factors! Example: What are the factors of 12? 3 and 4 are factors of 12, because 3 × 4 = 12. Also 2 × 6 = 12 so 2 and 6 are also factors of 12. And 1 × 12 = 12 so 1 and 12 are factors of 12 as well. So 1, 2, 3, 4, 6 and 12 are all factors of 12 And -1, -2, -3, -4, -6 and -12 also, because multiplying negatives makes a positive.
