Presentation transcript:

Objective of the Session: identify key features of formal correspondence.

Assume you are filling the sections in a job application form. Getting-to-know-you! Share your strengths and review your weaknesses for changing them into strengths Assume you are filling the sections in a job application form. (8 mins.)

(2mins) What is Writing? Wondering for a definition !!! “Compose it on your own” (2mins)

How Is It Different From Speaking??

Pen functions far different than tongue…

Bridging this gap is “Communicative Competence” Remember! Bridging this gap is “Communicative Competence”

“Significance of Communicative Competence in Writing” Your body language is not supporting your communication. Your tone & style can only be delivered in form of words & punctuation marks. Your gestures are not visible. No matter how loud your feelings are….but these can only be expressed in form of written words. You can not have eye contact with your audience. Your facial expressions cannot scaffold your ideas. So, the duty doubles!!

Should I always give lengthy details while I write? Big “NO” for Formal Correspondence!! What’s That?

Difference between formal & Informal

Think-Tank What do you think are the major differences in purpose, audience & style of formal & informal communication?

Key Features of Formal Correspondence

Writing Prompt Compose an email addressing your head/boss requesting for an early arrival from a training arranged outstation. You should thank him/her for nominating you for training. Provide logical support to your stated cause. Include relevant details such as dates & days with timings. Explicitly mention your willingness for attending both events (training and the other appointment you are excusing for)

A request for early arrival Respected Sir,          I am honored to be nominated for "A.B.C Teacher Training Programme in Sharjah" as I believe that it will be a worth learning experience for me and I would not ever let the chance to be missed out; but it there is an event on 5th August 2017 in Karachi, which is mandatory for me to attend as obligated by the firm I am employed at, thus my attendance is equally important in both of the events. Fortunately, the Islamabad session will end on 4th of August so it would be kind of you to let me know if it is possible for me to return back on 4th by midnight or sometime early in the morning on 5th of August to Karachi.             The above-stated occasion is planned to begin early in the morning where I will have to represent my institute. Your cooperation in this matter will be highly appreciated. Looking forward to your worthy reply.   Regards, X.Y. Z

What if I want to compose an essay/SOP/answer scripts in aptitude tests?? Academic essays are classified under formal writing, thus these again need to be planned, organized, coherent and impersonal. Essays are assessed for: Organization Coherence & Cohesion Lexical Resource Language & Content Logical Reasoning

Steps to be followed for composing essays /SOP/ answer scripts in aptitude tests: Plan before you start. Think of a precise but clear “Title”. Your beginning is where you attract the audience and state your purpose. “Thesis statement” should always be included in introductory paragraph (application may vary in professional write-ups) Each paragraph in the main body should start with “Topic Sentence”. Your conclusion is not just the restatement of above-mentioned points but should enable the audience to reach the aimed conclusion.

Body of an Essay

A Prompt: 1) Reflect: Reflect on your experience as a learner. Use the questions to write a descriptive essay. • What kind of materials did the teachers use most often, for example, course books, pictures, teacher-created materials, or student-created materials? Describe them. • Compare your childhood experience with learning materials with the information in this lesson. What are the similarities and differences? • Does your experience as a learner influence your materials choices as a teacher? In what ways?

A prompt: Your study group recently attended a seminar on modern classroom environments. You have made the notes below. Some points about modern classrooms: Students are given more freedom. Classrooms are often divided into different sections. Learning difficulties are recognized and treated according to the students’ needs. Write an essay for your tutor discussing two of the points in your notes. You should explain which you think is more important and provide reasons to support your opinion.
