Frontloading

BTW HISTORY First Black school in Memphis was Clay Street School. Founded in 1874. Clay Street School became Kortrecht High School in 1891. IN 1926, KORTRECHT HIGH SCHOOL BECAME BOOKER T. WASHINGTON HIGH SCHOOL. Green P. Hamilton was the first principal under the new name of Booker T. Washington High.

BTW HISTORY: Principals Blair T. Hunt- (1888-1978) Principal of Booker T. Washington High School for 24 years. Pastor of Mississippi Boulevard from 1921-1973 First Deputy Probation Officer for Juvenile Court Founding member of Memphis Urban League and the Negro YMCA Known as a “liaison” between white politicians, especially “Boss” Crump, Mayor of Memphis, and African American citizens.

BTW HISTORY: Principals GREEN P. HAMILTON- Educator, minister and businessman. Titled the “first” principal of Booker T. Washington because the name of the school changed under his appointment. Organized the first African American high school band in Memphis around 1900. Author of two books, The Bright Side of Memphis and Beacon Lights of the Race. Hamilton Elementary, Middle and High are named after him.

BTW HISTORY: Principals ELSIE LEWIS BAILEY- Graduate of Booker T. Washington Created the Freshman Academy Program Named High School Academic Superintendent.

BTW HISTORY: Principals ALISHA KINER– current principal Became principal of Booker T. Washington High School in 2005 Hosted the President of the United States, Barack Obama, in 2011 after the school won the Race to the Top Commencement Challenge.  

Tiered Tasks Tier Time Allotted Assignment Tier #1 6 minutes Create a list that shows the characteristics consistent with BTW history. (see previous notes) Tier #2 8 minutes Complete the event organizer to develop ideas for the infomercial. See organizer on next slide Today’s Task 15 minutes Develop an infomercial (commercial ) that shows the pride and history of BTW from information you have gathered Decide which students will begin in which tier. True differentiation does not require all students to complete all assignments. The “TIER 1” assignment should utilize verbs from the KNOWLEDGE level of Bloom’s. *In the KNOWLEDGE level of Bloom’s, students remember/recall previously learned information. The verbs to use in this level are: arrange, define, describe, duplicate, identify, label, list, match, memorize, name, order, outline, recognize, relate, recall, repeat, reproduce, select, state The “TIER 2” assignment should utilize verbs from the COMPREHENSION and APPLICATION levels of Bloom’s. *In the COMPREHENSION level of Bloom’s, students demonstrate an understanding of the facts. The verbs to use in this level are: classify, convert, defend, describe, discuss, distinguish, estimate, explain, express, extend, generalized, give examples, identify, indicate, infer, locate, paraphrase, predict, recognize, rewrite, review, select, summarize, translate *In the APPLICATION level of Bloom’s, students apply knowledge to actual situations. The verbs to use in this level are: apply, change, choose, compute, demonstrate, discover, dramatize, employ, illustrate, interpret, manipulate, modify, operate, practice, predict, prepare, produce, relate, schedule, show, sketch, solve, use, write Today’s Task is simply copied from slide 2 of this presentation. This is the last assignment students will complete before leaving class. Students only have 12 minutes to complete this assignment and timing for this assignment will continue on the next few slides. Tier 1 Task This will be page one of your booklet. Write at least two paragraphs about your ideal high school. This can include but not limited to rules, improving/spreading positivity, expectations of teachers/administrators and student expectations, how students will find a career path , and how they should feel at the end.

Tier 2 Task This will the second page of the booklet The students will read and respond to the question posted below the BTW HISTORY FACT picture posted around the room

Tier 3 Task This is page 3 of the booklet Students will go around the room and select 10 of the famous alumni and write 2 interesting facts from each life story of each alumni

Today’s Task Students will create a booklet concerning the history of THE BTW. Students will receive full credit for Designing a cover Ideal high school Life for early black students Alumni facts about your school
