Practical Information – The Written Exam 5 hours, 9-14, on 7 December 2017 You should bring an English-English dictionary, E.g. Oxford Advanced, Longman etc. (not business dictionaries, Norwegian-English, English-German etc.). And you will not have access to any electronic dictionaries Content and language count 50-50 as far as the grade is concerned 3 parts which all count 33% Remember to read the questions carefully Leave enough time at the end to read through everything and correct grammar (e.g. concord) and spelling mistakes. Part II A) Text study (17%) Reading comprehension of an unknown article and questions to test your comprehension. The answers should be based only on the content in the article you have read, not what you know about the topic in general. The length of the answer expected is indicated, e.g. 3-4 sentences. (3 sentences = a minimum) Use your own words, do not copy sentences and phrases directly from the text. Write full sentences, not lists of points. Remember not to spend too much time on this question as you have quite a bit of work to do. Example: Explain how Africa's natural resources are not always a blessing. Part II B) Questions based on units in English for Business Studies (17%) Norwegian students: 3-4 questions based on the units in English for Business Studies Exchange students: 3-4 questions based on the units in English for Business Studies, 2 of which will be based on the self-study units. A suggested length for the answer is indicated, e.g. 4-5 sentences. To prepare, look at the questions to the units and all the texts in the units themselves. You are expected to explain and answer questions about content, but also to use the relevant vocabulary of the unit. Example: Explain what venture capitalists call a ten-year investment cycle. Part III: Essay (33%) An essay on a topic from International Relations, e.g. The EU, NATO, US foreign policy, business in Asia etc. Suggested length of the essay: 500-600 words. Minimum: 400 words. Maximum: 700 words.   Make sure you have a clear structure (introduction, main part, conclusion) Make sure that the main part of your essay is your discussion. You should show that you do not just know the curriculum well, but that you can also use it to support arguments. Example: “After a brief description of the present state of Japan’s economy, go on to discuss the benefits and challenges of Shinzo Abe’s plan for the Japanese economy. The Oral Exam 25 minutes When: Check the list on my web page, Fronter or student web. It is either December 12, 13 or 14. Where: To be announced 3 parts: A 7-minute presentation on a pre-approved topic. You are supposed to make a PowerPoint presentation, but may NOT bring a manuscript. Bring your PP on a memory stick in addition to having it available on-line. The presentation part of the oral exam The presentation should be 7 minutes long, and about a current economic, social or political issue. It can be related to the topics taught in the course, but not directly based on the curriculum. Remember, it has to be analytical, not descriptive. A couple of examples of topics from former exams: Human Trafficking in the EU- How are they dealing with this issue and how successful are they? To what extent will Brazil be a driver of the global economy in the future? What kinds of changes did Hong Kong address when they went from being a British colony to becoming a part of China, and how will this affect the election in 2017?  30 December, 201830 December, 2018
