For Libraries

ACT 2015

Based on the scientific research in reading K-2 emphasis on foundational skills (phonological awareness, phonics, structure of the language…), and developing automaticity 3-6 emphasis on foundational skills, fluency, comprehension, vocabulary, and writing

Phonological awareness Phonological Awareness – ability to notice the sound structure of spoken words – rhyming books, pattern books, concept books

Phonics Phonics – alphabet books, books with simple text (basic words)

Vocabulary Vocabulary: dictionary skills, concept books ( Color, Mousling’s Words)

Fluency Fluency: read picture books they can read to each other

Comprehension Comprehension: choose books to read that require discussion ( books that teach literary devices)

Writing Writing: The Important Book, Fortunately A little pig is walking down the street, unaware of the hungry wolf waiting around the corner, when SUDDENLY the pig remembers he has left something behind and turns away at the last second, leaving the wolf to fall flat on his face The important thing about a spoon is that you eat with it. It’s like a little shovel. You hold it in your hand. You can put it in your mouth, and it spoons things up. But the important thing about a spoon is that you eat with it.
