Presentation transcript:

What is Science? A method for studying the natural world. A process that uses observation and investigation to gain knowledge about events in nature

Observation Inference The attentive watching and recording of somebody or something that is happening. Inference A conclusion drawn from evidence or reasoning.

Scientific Situation Proceeding in a systematic and methodical way A set of conditions that characterize an event

Characteristics of a Scientific Observation 1. Obtained using the senses 2. Descriptive of exact qualities 3. Numerical values if possible 4. Systematically recorded

Observation Examples Use the two boards

Characteristics of a Scientific Inference 1. Not directly observed 2. Made from multiple observations if possible 3. Predict possible outcomes (past or future) 4. Predict possible processes (How did it happen?)

Inference Examples Use the two boards

Observation Practice Observation Scientific Obs. 1. It is hot in this room. 2. The periodic table has a lot of elements. 3. Mr. Neely is tall.

Observation Practice Inference Scientific Inf. 1. There must be other science teachers in the high school. 2. It must be hot outside. 3. Mr. Neely must teach other students.
