Welcome to our STEM night!

What is STEM? STEM education is an approach to teaching and learning that integrates the content and skills of science, technology, engineering, and math (MSDE, 2012). STEM instruction should include engagement in inquiry, logical reasoning, collaboration, and investigation (MSDE, 2012).

Why STEM? If we analyze where we stand in terms of technology and all the scientific global issues that we face daily, we will understand the need for an education reform geared to science, technology, engineering and math. The goal of STEM Education is to prepare students for post-secondary study and the 21st century (MSDE, 2012). National center for Education Statistics

How will STEM Education make its way to our classrooms? In the article Advancing STEM Education: A 2020 Vision, Rodger W. Bybee explains that it will take the U.S. education system at least 10 years to reach higher levels of STEM Education. So STEM education is a long term goal that will take a lot of work from several entities involved in our education system including Administrators, educators, businesses and parents. We have the challenge to prepare our students for a very competitive workforce and STEM Education is the solution.

STEM in the classroom The main focus of STEM Education to prepare students for 21st century careers by: Providing context based science education Focusing on real world global issues Enabling students to use the four STEM disciplines to draw conclusions and provide solutions to global issues as a STEM team. Identifying and explaining STEM issues and using STEM information to draw conclusions.

Global issues that may be addressed with a STEM perspective. Epidemics Conservation of Energy Conservation of Natural Resources Pollution Population Growth Climate changes and its impact Extinction of Species

Some 21st century STEM Careers: Environmental Engineers Mechanical Engineers Microbiologists Biochemists and Biophysicists Aerospace Engineers Health and Safety Engineers Industrial Engineers STEM careers video
