Since its inception, the company’s focus has been clear: to pro-duce products that drive down the total cost of ownership (TCO) of the desktop. We have rapidly built a worldwide market for our software license metering products.

What is Software Metering? The Ability to: Monitor all applications running on the network Number of users Types of applications Frequency of use Software Asset Management Software metering is an essential component of Software Asset Management (SAM) designed to reduce costs and give you control of your enterprise LEAD IN TO THIS SLIDE: ABC Lan Licenser 3 is a multi-platform license control package that: Actively meters software applications to ensure compliance with license agreements. Passively monitors applications to provide timely usage information. Controls access to applications to help secure the network. DISCUSSION POINT FOR FIRST CHECK (MONITOR…..): How many people are truly logging on What types of applications are they running? Are they supported? Are they legal ? Are they productive? How often are these programs being run? Are you paying for things that are not being used? DISCUSSION POINT FOR SECOND CHECK (ESSENTIAL…..): If SAM is implemented effectively it can greatly increase network control and reduce overall TCO.

Features of Lan Licenser Meters all applications throughout the Enterprise Applications from servers, CD’s, floppies and H/D’s Control applications by: users, workstations, time groups and cost centers. Scalability Scales from a single server solution to multiple server solution configurations Fault tolerant Low Resource Requirements Minimal network traffic

Features of Lan Licenser Flexible metering capabilities: Active metering Enforce License Limits or restrict access Passive metering Gather usage data with no restrictions Laptop Support License check-out for laptop users Offline metering Active or passive metering for mobile users` Product start-up messaging Notify users and help desk of products not supported Notify users of software policy, real-time

Make Qualified Decisions on: Software purchases Buy the software you actually need – not what you think you need! Maintenance agreements Why pay for maintenance on software that is not used? Software usage statistics Find out what software is used the most or the least. Future user requirements Budget effectively for future purchases based on present trends. Identify potential license breeches Reduce the risk of prosecution. Simplify organizations desktop Standardise your corporate desktops. Identify accurate software & support costs What is the real cost of using particular applications? Help desk support tool Train help desk staff to support most used products. Total Cost of Ownership Reduce your TCO based on Real data!

Eliminates Hidden Costs Rogue / Conflicting DLLs Nonstandard Desktop Many Vendor’s Products Wasted Hardware Resources Lack of Timely Usage Information Tracks conflicts of DLL’s to assist help desk. Diagnose anything out of the norm. Maintenance contracts from various departments or locations. Diagnose at the network level. Memory, H.D. (reclaim storage capacity), eliminate unused applications. Centrally located procurement, avoid duplication. Multiple Maintenance Contracts Help Desk Complications NO Accountability On Desktop

(Source: IDC, measuring and lowering total cost of ownership) The average cost of Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) per P.C. is $5,200. Combined Inventory / Metering Report Inventory Plus License Metering Gives An Accurate Picture Inventory What’s out there? Who’s using it and how much? Lan Licenser Report Wizard Combined Inventory / Metering Report

Software Metering - Putting it All Together Compliance Inventory Metering Reporting Software metering is at the center for tracking usage requirements. It works hand in hand with your inventory software to provide effective asset management throughout your organization. It is the lynchpin to ensuring compliance and assessing accurate software tracking. It is the key factor to help you ensure you are buying the right software and the right maintenance at the right time. Procurement

Architecture Our technical acumen and expertise in software management and metering has been recognized by the press, industry analysts, blue-chip customers, and by the information technology (IT) industry worldwide. ABC Enterprise Systemsplaces a strong emphasis on software development, quality, and testing. To deliver the quality that our customers demand, our software research and development center , based at our offices in Telford, England, offers substantial testing and simulation facilities. Our Americas headquarters is in Mountain View, California, in the heart of Silicon Valley. Other offices are in Andover, Massachusetts; Telford and Sydney, Australia.

Lan Licenser Architecture: A Typical Site Tier 1 Database Resides here Site Server (NT4.0 or Win 2000 Server) MS SQL DB Able to dynamically add servers as needed and provides fail-over support Tier 2 Software Metering Servers (NT, Win 2000) Data Cache Lan Licenser uses a three tiered architecture, the bottom tier (3) is the data collection client that is installed on each station. Tier 2 is the software metering server which tracks the usage information collected by the clients. Tier 1 is the site server which maintains the database of information from which the reports are generated and the configurations are determined. The administer resides in Tier 1. Each site server can support multiple metering servers which can be dynamically added as capacity requires. Licenser can be expanded to the largest enterprise network by simply adding additional software metering servers. Resources required: Site Server - 128 MB RAM,1.5 Mb disk space per client as a rule Metering Server - 96 Mb RAM Client – 1Mb RAM Tier 3 Client Agent (Win 3.x, Win95 / 98, Win NT, Win 2000) Data Collection

Licenser Enterprise Manager Architecture New York HQ Site (Parent) Tokyo Site (Child) London Site (Child) Centralized management of licensed product, combined with flexible local management The second component of Lan Licenser is the Enterprise Manager which enables you to have multiple sites within a company or around the world. In the example, the U.S. office is the head office (Parent) and from there the U.K. and Japanese offices (designated Child sites) can be administered. Each site can also have control of its own area and simply report usage back to the parent site. This enables you to leverage cost savings and efficiencies across distributed enterprise locations. Enterprise Manager contains load balancing because some licensing agreements which allows load balancing between regions. This enables you to dynamically shift licenses between regions or geographies. This can result in major cost savings and efficiencies. i.e. when such agreements are in place, as the U.S. workforce goes home, the licenses can be shifted to the Hong Kong workforce. Enterprise Manager also provides trend analysis which enables estimates of future usage to be anticipated. This will enable the automatic distribution of licenses to where they are most needed. Advanced data management capability over a global enterprise Dynamically share licenses enterprise wide Increased scalability for global organizations

Compliance Washington, DC (24 May 2000) -- Results of the fifth annual benchmark survey on global software piracy were released today, highlighting the serious impact of copyright infringement to the software industry. Piracy losses exceeded $12 billion worldwide in 1999 and topped $59 billion during the past five years. The survey, conducted by an independent research firm, was commissioned by the Business Software Alliance (BSA) and the Software & Information Industry Association (SIIA). "Software piracy continues unabated, robbing the industry of thousands of jobs, billions in wages, tax revenues and critical investments in new technologies," according to Robert Holleyman, president and CEO, Business Software Alliance. Companies that are not using compliant software are being fined thousands of dollars plus may be faced with potential criminal prosecution.

Other IT Areas that Benefit Asset Management - Find out how many people are using the app and who they are. Service Desk - Establish what were the last 3 apps that ran before the workstation crashed. Maintenance - Decide on which versions of an application you need to support (and which can you eliminate). Security - Investigate what unauthorized or restricted apps are being used where and by whom. Hardware - How much disk space on the network can we recoup?
