Lan Licenser Architecture: A Typical Site Tier 1 Database Resides here Site Server (NT4.0 or Win 2000 Server) MS SQL DB Able to dynamically add servers as needed and provides fail-over support Tier 2 Software Metering Servers (NT, Win 2000) Data Cache Lan Licenser uses a three tiered architecture, the bottom tier (3) is the data collection client that is installed on each station. Tier 2 is the software metering server which tracks the usage information collected by the clients. Tier 1 is the site server which maintains the database of information from which the reports are generated and the configurations are determined. The administer resides in Tier 1. Each site server can support multiple metering servers which can be dynamically added as capacity requires. Licenser can be expanded to the largest enterprise network by simply adding additional software metering servers. Resources required: Site Server - 128 MB RAM,1.5 Mb disk space per client as a rule Metering Server - 96 Mb RAM Client – 1Mb RAM Tier 3 Client Agent (Win 3.x, Win95 / 98, Win NT, Win 2000) Data Collection
Licenser Enterprise Manager Architecture New York HQ Site (Parent) Tokyo Site (Child) London Site (Child) Centralized management of licensed product, combined with flexible local management The second component of Lan Licenser is the Enterprise Manager which enables you to have multiple sites within a company or around the world. In the example, the U.S. office is the head office (Parent) and from there the U.K. and Japanese offices (designated Child sites) can be administered. Each site can also have control of its own area and simply report usage back to the parent site. This enables you to leverage cost savings and efficiencies across distributed enterprise locations. Enterprise Manager contains load balancing because some licensing agreements which allows load balancing between regions. This enables you to dynamically shift licenses between regions or geographies. This can result in major cost savings and efficiencies. i.e. when such agreements are in place, as the U.S. workforce goes home, the licenses can be shifted to the Hong Kong workforce. Enterprise Manager also provides trend analysis which enables estimates of future usage to be anticipated. This will enable the automatic distribution of licenses to where they are most needed. Advanced data management capability over a global enterprise Dynamically share licenses enterprise wide Increased scalability for global organizations
Compliance Washington, DC (24 May 2000) -- Results of the fifth annual benchmark survey on global software piracy were released today, highlighting the serious impact of copyright infringement to the software industry. Piracy losses exceeded $12 billion worldwide in 1999 and topped $59 billion during the past five years. The survey, conducted by an independent research firm, was commissioned by the Business Software Alliance (BSA) and the Software & Information Industry Association (SIIA). "Software piracy continues unabated, robbing the industry of thousands of jobs, billions in wages, tax revenues and critical investments in new technologies," according to Robert Holleyman, president and CEO, Business Software Alliance. Companies that are not using compliant software are being fined thousands of dollars plus may be faced with potential criminal prosecution.
Other IT Areas that Benefit Asset Management - Find out how many people are using the app and who they are. Service Desk - Establish what were the last 3 apps that ran before the workstation crashed. Maintenance - Decide on which versions of an application you need to support (and which can you eliminate). Security - Investigate what unauthorized or restricted apps are being used where and by whom. Hardware - How much disk space on the network can we recoup?
