Galaxies

Learning goals We are learning about other components of the universe. We are learning to identify galaxies by shape.

Galaxies (Text Ref. Page 285-286) recall…. galaxies are enormous collections of stars, planets, gas, and dust come in different shapes and sizes grouped by shape into four categories

1. Elliptical Galaxies a large group of stars that together make an elliptical or oval shape

2. Spiral Galaxies a large group of stars that together make a spiral shape have a central bulge with 2 - 4 spiral arms

2. Spiral Galaxies subclass is barred spiral galaxies have a central bar running down the middle ex. The Milky Way

3. Lenticular Galaxies a large group of stars that together make a shape that has a central bulge but no spiral arms

4. Irregular Galaxies a large group of stars that together have no definite shape

Classifying Galaxies Activity: Classifying Galaxies page 387 Complete questions : 1, A-D

Galaxy Clusters the Milky Way is part of a group of more than 35 galaxies called the Local group Milky Way and Andromeda are on a collision course!! Lookout!!!
