Assignment 2 The final assignment requires you to develop a hypothetical health promotion intervention in the format of a grant proposal. This will involve: developing objectives for your initiative; performing a needs analysis (including background literature, analysing the health problem, and consideration of the context in which you are proposing the intervention); setting intervention aims/objectives; planning strategies for achieving these aims; and Identifying the means of evaluating objectives. Ensure that your budget does not exceed $200K per year and can be completed within 3 years. Review the Assignment 2 information in the Learning Guide.

1. Aims and objectives Aims: Broad statement of what the proposal aims to achieve, i.e. the overall purpose “This study aims to reduce alcohol-related violence and injury in Newcastle CBD” Objectives: Specific, measurable statements on how to achieve this “1. To develop a series of alcohol restriction measures in consultation with key stakeholders to restrict the consumption of alcohol in selected premises in Hunter Street” “2. To investigate the impact of alcohol restrictions in selected premises compared to control areas on the incidence of alcohol related violence and injury” Review the SMART framework

2. Background and rationale Already done! Use your literature review from Assignment 1, and reduce down to a few key points/arguments Statement of the public health problem Brief summary of the evidence for health promotion interventions what works, what doesn’t Statement as to why the proposed study is novel and important, and what you are going to do about it Use study modules/readings to help organise your thoughts Principles and competing ideologies in health promotion, social determinants, concepts of health, summarising evidence Note: If you want to change topic that is OK, but remember that you will need to provide a convincing rationale for the proposal

3. Proposed action plan What are you going to do, in what order and to what effect? Be specific. Review Module readings relating to program planning and evaluation cycle, and program logic, stages of research and evaluation model, PRECEDE/PROCEED model Ch 6 and 7 of Talbot and Verinder are very helpful Note: sample size estimates in practice consult a biostatistician

4. Strategies to evaluate impact How will you assess whether your health promotion intervention has worked? Develop an evaluation plan that monitors the intervention before, during and after. Process evaluation measures Has the intervention been implemented appropriately? Has it reached the right target group etc? Assesses the process of implementation. Impact evaluation measures What immediate effects? How will you measure these? Outcome evaluation measures What longer term effects? Are the ‘Aims’ being achieved? How will you measure these?

5. Anticipated outcomes and significance Why is the health promotion intervention important? Sell your proposal, convince the reader What specific / measurable outcomes / changes / deliverables will the intervention lead to? Why is this change significant?

6. Proposed timeline Think through the list of things that need to occur to achieve your planned intervention Order them in sequence, and estimate how much time each will take You can use a Gantt Chart to describe the timeline Or, you can organise the timeline in the text, as a list under subheadings e.g. 0-6 mths, 6-12 mths, etc.

7. Proposed budget, and justification of budget Use a table for an indicative budget Justify each item in the text. Why do you need each of these items? Note: Doesn’t have to be an exhaustive line by line budget. Include the key elements and enough information to convince the reader that the cost is appropriate Usually includes key sub-headings of: Personnel costs How many staff? For how long?
