Jurassic Hub L3 Workgroups in 2018: Using Technology (Geogebra) to Enhance Students’ Understanding of A Level Mathematics 11 Schools, 14 Participants Core Maths as a Cross-Curricular Innovation 7 Schools, 8 Participants

Using Geogebra Workgroup Slices of Pi activity... How could you use Geogebra in conjunction with this problem?

Feedback "Vastly increased my knowledge of what is possible with Geogebra"   “The course boosted my confidence in using Geogebra massively. I it almost every lesson and see its value across all levels at school." "This is the best classroom based course I have done for a long time, possibly ever.  It has a had a clear and positive impact on my everyday teaching, and has also assisted in helping to boost students' engagement and understanding of concepts“ “The course has had a huge effect as it has opened my eyes to the capabilities of Geogebra. Consequently, I will be able to plan to use it in many new ways"

Core Maths Work Group The following A level subjects were investigated: Business Studies Geography Applied Science Psychology Biology

Suggested Questions from the graph: What was the global population in 2017? Predict the percentage of the global population that own a mobile phone: a) Half way through 2014. b) At the start of 2020. c) At the start of 2100. Which of these predictions is likely to be the most accurate? Jemima says that the number of people in the world who own a phone is falling. Do you agree with this statement? Justify your answer by referring to the graph. How many people in the world owned a mobile phone at the start of 2011? Rupert decides to investigate the correlation between the percentage of the global population that own a mobile phone and the percentage change in that population from one year to the next. What sort of correlation would you expect to see and why?

Key Findings Many departments were teaching the maths element of the course in a discrete chunk, usually in year 13. Some subjects don’t really value the mathematical processes involved but focus on students critiquing the outcomes. In some cases departments would prefer maths teachers to help deliver the maths content of the course. There is a wealth of useful resources available to use in Core Maths lessons from the work that other departments are doing in their A level courses.
