Matthew 5.1-12 Seeing the crowds, he went up on the mountain, and when he sat down, his disciples came to him. 2 And he opened his mouth and taught them, saying: 3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Beatitudes… “blessed” - a spiritual condition of divinely gifted joy already present

Beatitudes… v. 3 – “poor in spirit” – humbly recognizes their spiritual impoverishment

Beatitudes… v. 4 – “mourn” – brokenhearted

Beatitudes… v. 5 – “meek” – poised assurance in Jesus

Beatitudes… v. 6 – “hunger and thirst for righteousness” – pursuing Jesus’ righteousness at all cost

Beatitudes… v. 7 – “merciful” – not only put up with the troubles of others, but take on people’s troubles

Beatitudes… v. 8 – “pure in heart” – living out the ways of Jesus with your feelings, mind and will

Beatitudes… v. 9 – “peacemakers” – reconcilers

Beatitudes… v. 10 – “persecuted…” – uncommon living comes at a cost

Beatitudes… v. 11 – “revile…utter all kinds of evil against you falsely…” – be prepared for a great reward

Take-aways… To live uncommon will come at a cost.
