Soooo cold!!! Pilgrimsssss!!!

This is where they Messed up… And went to MA Instead of VA This is VA

Plymouth, MA (Massachusetts) 1620

To clear up some confusion: This is God…

In America, God is part of ALL life so anyone can govern! In England, monarchists aka Absolutists (kings/queens) told people that God gave them divine power to be the one and only ruler! Everyone had to do what they said! God controls the world In America, God is part of ALL life so anyone can govern!

They signed the Mayflower Compact and were ready to create their settlement at Plymouth. But they wouldn’t have survived without Squanto…

The great Puritan Migration Next came… 1629 - 1642 The great Puritan Migration

Who came during the Great Puritan Migration? Congregationalists – Puritans who wanted to reform the Anglican church (Church of England – Protestants) from within

Who led them? John Winthrop

What did he want to do to New England?

“City upon a hill!”

All Puritans believed they had a covenant with God (like an agreement, connection etc.) Government was to be a covenant among the people; work was to serve a communal ideal, and, of course, the true church (that is, the Puritan church) was always to be served.

So that means religious freedom… but only for Puritans!

Very hard workers!!!!! And they were all about family!!!!! Calvinists… Very hard workers!!!!! And they were all about family!!!!!

New England vs. Chesapeake

Roger Williams

He was removed from the colony…and went to…

In Rhode Island = freedom of religion …you didn’t have to be a church member to vote…

Another controversial person

Fast forward now to 1649 Oliver Cromwell ruled – Puritan No need for Puritans to come to the New World So the migration came to a big halt!!!!

puritans started coming But when Cromwell was killed in 1658… puritans started coming back!!!

Don’t forget about The Indians!! Pequot War

So England started making more colonies

…it became very Catholic Haven of religious Tolerance!!! …it became very Catholic

Don’t forget that these guys were in America too!!!

1664

Ok, so today we talked about the founding of many colonies!!!
