English I Lesson Plans Second Nine Weeks Fahrenheit 451 Guidebook Unit Week of November 12

Unit Two: Fahrenheit 451 Overview/Objectives: Students will continue reading Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, analyzing the character development and the author’s use of literary elements and devices in developing themes in the story.

“Think About It” Quote #3 MONDAY, NOVEMBER 12 Today we will: Discuss pages 29-38 of Fahrenheit 451 Analyze the author’s language and how it contributes to characterization and plot Analyze how the author uses literary devices to develop a theme You will need: Your copy of Fahrenheit 451 Part One Packet Pen or pencil BELLRINGER “Think About It” Quote #3 “Montag had done nothing. His hand had done it all…” (35)

Review Last week, we analyzed how characters interact as well as how symbolism can help to advance the plot and develop a theme in the story. We also learned that Montag is beginning to question his role in his society. Today, we will discuss how Bradbury uses the relationship between Montag and Beatty to create conflict and advance the plot of the story.

Whole Class Discussion: Pages 29-38 When Montag asks, “Was it always like this…Didn’t firemen prevent fires rather than stoke them up?” how do the other firemen react? They get an alarm for a house. Who called in the alarm? What is different about this alarm from most of them? “Montag’s hand closed like a mouth…” What did he take? What form of figurative language is being used? When they burn the house, Montag tries to get the woman to leave but she politely refuses. Who does this remind us of? What does the woman hold in her hand? What does she intend to do with it? 5 minutes

Small Group Discussion: Pages 32-37 With your group, discuss the following topics: What is the relationship between Montag and Captain Beatty? Compare the language used to describe Beatty and Montag. How does it contrast? How does it help advance the plot? Allow each member of the group to contribute Use your conversation stems. Assigned tracker should be tracking each member for proper participation 5 minutes

Activity 2: Evolution of Montag Complete the following handouts: Evolution of Montage – add Captain Beatty Split-notes – answer question 13 5 minutes

Whole Class Discussion “Montag’s hand closed like a mouth…” (34) (37) What did his hand do? What form of figurative language is being used? When they get back to the firehouse, Montag mentions that the woman said something like “Play the man Master Ridley.” (37) (40) How does Beatty react? What does this reveal about Captain Beatty? What does Beatty’s knowledge of the quote reveal about his character? How does it help advance the plot? 5 minutes

Activity 3: Anchor Text Theme Tracker Complete Anchor Text Theme Tracker Add the symbolism of Montag’s hands Symbolism Montag’s hands 5 minutes

Monday, November 12 HOMEWORK Read pages 38-49 (41-52) to prepare for quizlet and discussion tomorrow Part One Vocabulary Log and Sentences due tomorrow

“Think About It” Quote #4 TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 13 Today we will: Discuss pages 38-49 of Fahrenheit 451 Analyze the author’s word choice and how it contributes to characterization Analyze an example of how the author uses literary devices to develop a theme You will need: Your copy of Fahrenheit 451 Part One Packet Conversation Stems Discussion Tracker Pen or pencil BELLRINGER “Think About It” Quote #4 “It was suddenly more important than any other thing in life that he know where he had met Mildred.” (43)

Review Yesterday, we discussed how Bradbury uses the relationship between Montag and Beatty to create conflict and advance the plot of the story. Today, we will focus on the progression (or regression) of Montag’s relationship with Millie and it’s effect on him.

Whole Class Discussion Pages 38-45 Why is it so important to Montag that he remembers where and when he and Mildred first met? How does Millie react to his questions? According to Millie, what happened to Clarisse? How does Mildred react when Montag tells her about the woman they burned? 5 minutes

Activity 1: Evolution of Montag Complete the following handouts: Evolution of Montage – Add to/update Mildred Split-notes – Answer question 14 5 minutes

Activity 2: Reading Log Consider Montag’s thoughts and actions since his experience at the old woman’s house. What was his reaction to what happened at the house? What does he realize as a result of the old woman’s reaction to the firemen burning her books? Why do you think this is significant to the development of Montag’s character? Record your answer on your Reading Log 5 minutes

Review Yesterday, we analyzed Beatty’s argument for the need of firefighters in their society and found evidence to support his claim. Today, we will discuss Montag’s reaction to all that has happened and determine a central theme of the text.

Whole Class Discussion Review Pages 60-65 What claim does Montag try to make in his conversation with Millie? Why is this claim ineffective in convincing Millie? 5 minutes

Small Group Discussion Consider Montag’s evolution over the course of the story. Consider Beatty’s claims about how this has become a society in which books are illegal and burned. Why has this society become one in which the pursuit of knowledge is frowned upon? How does the government in this society discourage people from reading books?. What do people do instead of reading books? What happens to people who don’t conform to the conventions of the society? Based on this, what would be a central theme of the novel so far? 10 minutes
