By Adam Douglas and Bethany Pledger Analysing Sound By Adam Douglas and Bethany Pledger

Studio sound recording Takes place in a recording studio. Microphones are used to record the audio Recording studios have insulated walls so sound from outside doesn't get in so that the recording is not interrupted A Recording studio also has a control panel usually on the opposite side of the microphones that the people are speaking into. A recording studio is normally needed for sound recording, mixing, and audio production of instrumental or vocal musical performances, spoken words (voice acting), and other sounds.

Location sound recording Is the recording of sound in a location that is outside. To record sound outside correctly and to make sure you have good audio you will need a production sound mixer, location sound recordist or a location sound engineer.

Stationary and moving sound Stationary sound sources come from a person or an object that is not moving. The sound of the stationary object has a relatively unchanged amplitude. This means the sound of a stationary object has a constant quality. This makes the sound crisp and clear which creates a more realistic sound. A moving sound source comes from a sound coming from any direction which is recorded by a microphone. The Doppler Effect changes the pitch and tone of the sound when it moves past a mic from one side to the other. You could normally get a better sound from something stationary then something moving. “Stationary” Sorry…. Not sorry

Foley Foley is the remake or re-production of sound. The man who came up with the idea of re-making sound was Jack Foley hence why the sound effect-art was called Foley. These sound effects that are recorded are used in the film and TV Industry to get the best quality sound effects in films or TV shows. Example video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UO3N_PRIgX0

Ambient sound Ambient sound is the sound from background noises. Some of these common sounds are wind, rushing water, birds chirping and dogs barking. These sounds are used in the background of scenes from movies or films to make the scene seem more realistic.

Sound effects Sound effects are the sounds for specific shots of movement or stationary sound. A sound effect is a sound that is not a piece of speech (dialogue) or music. Sound effects are used to make scenes like car chase scenes sound realistic with the sounds of an engine and the screeching of the tires on the road. Sound effects can be reused for different projects a perfect example of that is the Wilhelm Scream: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zf8aBFTVNEU

Music Music is the use of vocal and/or instrumental sounds that make a tune to some sort of beat or metronome. Music is one of the biggest industries in the world. It is used in all parts of the industry like in film and radio It is also used to make scenes in movies more emotional or exciting. The best films normally have a very memorable sound track and so if you were to hear a song from a certain movie it would probably remind you of that movie and it might also remind you of the emotions of the scenes that song is used in.

Drama dialogue Drama dialogue is the exchange of two people speaking in a way that could offend the other. Drama dialogue makes a scene more dramatic which makes the audience want to watch more. This makes drama dialogue effective in industry as it doesn’t just get the audience’s attention but adds to the story-line thickening the plot of the Movie or TV show.

Contrapuntal sound Contrapuntal sound is where the emotion in the music playing contradicts the emotion in the scene This sound makes scenes stand out and can make a scene funny. Example (made by Bethany): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AbgYYKCE6b0&feature=youtu.be
