Key Messages Despite all we have done, smoking remains the biggest killer in the UK Fewer young people are smoking than ever before Nationally, smoking prevalence is 15.5% In the South West smoking prevalence is 13.8% (~ 632,000 adults) For every early avoidable death from tobacco, 20 other people suffer LTC 1 in 4 hospital beds are occupied by a smoker Less than 1 in 10 smokers in hospital are getting support to quit A call for smoking interventions to be everyday practice in the NHS Most effective way to quit is counselling and medication National strategy has a focus on pregnancy and mental health The vision is a tobacco free generation with prevalence less than 5% Acknowledgement that we are in the toughest phase Definition of a ‘Smokefree NHS’
