Kansas Leads the World in the Success of Each Student. Brad Neuenswander, Deputy Commissioner

IF I DIE- I hope it’s during a closing keynote speech because the transition to death would be so subtle.

How Times Have Changed 2016 2006 Don’t get in strangers’ cars. Don’t meet people from the internet. 2016 Literally summon strangers from the internet to get in their car.

Education is the only industry that waits for the government to tell them what to do. We are trying to break that culture.

Exploring the Educational Frontier This is our moonshot. -Dr. Randy Watson

Exploring the Educational Frontier Progress is a nice word. But Change is its motivator. And Change has its enemies. -Robert Kennedy

What Kansans want from their schools Kansas children need quality preschool including all day kindergarten Changes need to be made to address school culture New dynamic roles for counselor and social workers Collaboration between schools and businesses Reorganize schools around students, not the system Community service needs to play a bigger role We also learned that Kansans believe Every child needs access to quality preschool education School culture needs to be addressed – we must value the student going to a two-year or certification program as much as a student attending a four-year institution. Counselors need to be able to help students identify and explore career interests Must be collaboration between schools and businesses to prepare students for postsecondary pursuits Schools must be reorganized around the student, not the system to meet unique needs Community service is an important part of preparing students for life after high school.

Research complied by ACT In 1979, the average 30-year-old with a bachelor’s degree earned 17% more than a 30-year-old with a high school diploma. By 2004, this gap had increased to 50% (Levy & Murnane, 2004), and… Today it is well over 80% (Carnevale, Strohl, & Melton, 2014).

Starting with a class of 350 HS Freshmen In Kansas, ON AVERAGE… 304 will graduate HS 46 will not 196 will enroll in a 2- or 4-yr postsecondary institution 161 will complete 1 year of college and return the 2nd year, or have completed their certificate or degree 122 will complete a postsecondary degree or credential in 6 years 228 or 65% will fight for 8% of the jobs that earn a middle-class wage w/out some PS With 71% of all jobs in Kansas requiring some college or above, what are the 68 students not completing a credential 6 years after HS going to do???? This is why career education/exploration is so important for K-12, it’s the only way to close this large gap 5 minutes
