“Science for Future Molecular Systems” G-COE Seminar No.150 “Science for Future Molecular Systems” [2+2]-Photocycloaddition reactions: New selectivity patterns and synthetic applications ●Speaker : Prof. Thorsten Bach (Technical University of Munich） ●Date : 12ｔｈ Oct,2011 (Wed) ●Time : 15:00～16:30 ●Venue: West4-315, Ito campus Thorsten Bach obtained his education at the University of Heidelberg and at the University of Southern California, where he conducted his Diplom thesis with G. A. Olah. He received his Ph.D. in 1991 from the University of Marburg with M. T. Reetz and did post-doctoral work as a NATO fellow with D. A. Evans at Harvard University. He completed his Habilitation at the University of Münster in 1996, moved to the University of Marburg as an associate professor in 1997 and was appointed to the Chair of Organic Chemistry I at the Technische Universität München (TUM) in 2000. He is an elected member of the German Academy of Sciences (Leopoldina) since 2006 and of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences since 2009. He served as chairman of the department of chemistry in the years 2006 to 2009 and was an elected board member of the organic division of the Gesellschaft Deutscher Chemiker (GDCh) from 2004 to 2007. He has been granted several national and international awards, including the AstraZeneca Research Award for Organic Chemistry in 2001, the Novartis European Young Investigator Award in 2003 and the Degussa Award for Chirality in Chemistry in 2006. Among others he has held the Novartis lectureship (2003), the Feutrill Memorial Lecture (2007) and the Boehringer Ingelheim lectureship (2009). He serves as an Advisory Board member of Bicoll Ltd. and as an associate editor of Synthesis. His research interests comprise organic photochemistry, catalysis and natural product synthesis. Research accomplishments in the last area include the first enantioselective total synthesis of (+)-meloscine, the first total synthesis of punctaporonin C and major contributions to the structure elucidation and total synthesis of the thiazolyl peptide GE2270 A. In the former areas the development of enantioselective photochemical reactions, of catalytic C-C bond forming reactions and of diastereoselective SN1-type reactions deserve special mention.
