Promoting Internationalism Global Civil Society

Internationalism as a Political Process In common use, political refers to the affairs and structure of government, but more fundamentally it refers to the social relationships involving authority or power: Who has the power to make decisions? Internationalism, then, can be seen as part of a social relationship involving different groups in the process of making decisions that go beyond the borders of nation-states and affect the relationships between and among countries.

Global Civil Society Global civil society is a society of uncoerced collective action, involving citizens, nations, or groups willingly contributing to the betterment of an international community or cause. Rebuilding Civil Society (00:00- 05:40)

International Organizations Nation-states and governments are often preoccupied with issues that concern their nation, and generally act in their national interests. Nation- states often enter into international agreements and act according to their own national interests on the international stage.

International Organizations Organizations that transcend international boundaries that can empower and broaden the perspectives of people within numerous countries. These organizations play a key role in creating a global civil society.

Role of International Organizations They provide a diverse array of perspectives and information, allowing people to make informed decisions and participate more effectively in democracy They hold business and government accountable for their actions They often focus on one specific problem/issue in the world They are the main actors in global civil society Importance on Non-Governmental Organizations

Intergovernmental Organizations (IGOs) IGOs are set up by formal agreements among nations and they represent individual nations’ interests and the collective interests of all nations. The prime example of an IGO is the United Nations, which consists of over 190 countries whose representatives meet regularly to discuss and deal with global issues.

International Non-Governmental Organizations (INGOs) INGOs are not established by governments, but are instead set up by individuals and groups. Their qualities include: Non-profit Non-Religious Pacifist INGOs tend to have a mission and are clearly limited to solving a specific problem. Generally consist of voluntary members, with demographic qualities that span gender, nationality, and class.

Oxfam International Oxfam International is an INGO that works to help relieve, and hopefully end, poverty around the world. They do this by advocating for people’s basic human rights, empowering women around the world, providing disaster relief, advocating for fairer land policies and action on climate change, fighting world hunger, and providing basic services like healthcare and education. Solving the Poverty Puzzle

Their mission is to save lives, defeat poverty, and achieve social justice. CARE Emergency Relief

WRITING ASSIGNMENT II: OVERVIEW Paragraph 1: Introduction Paragraph 2: Body Paragraph Paragraph 3: Body Paragraph Paragraph 4: Body Paragraph Grade 11 & 12: Additional Body Paragraph Last Paragraph: Conclusion

What is the Major Essay? You receive one source (which will be a quote) and you are asked to analyze and then give your opinion on what the quote is saying. This is a PERSUASIVE essay, you are trying to convince the reader that your opinion on the quote is sound and legitimate.

Format of the Essay This essay is a basic 5 paragraph essay, it includes: an introductory paragraph, 3 body paragraphs, and a concluding paragraph.

WRITING ASSIGNMENT II: OVERVIEW The persuasive essay moves like an hourglass. The first paragraph (introduction) is very general. It explores the concepts in the quote and presents your opinion on those concepts. The middle paragraphs (body paragraphs) are more specific. They present sub-arguments and specific evidence to support your claims. The last paragraph (conclusion) is, again, general. It wraps up your ideas and presents your overall opinion again.

WRITING ASSIGNMENT II: STEPS Determine how you feel about nationalism/internationalism Analyze the quote What is the ideology in the source? Is the author presenting a positive or negative point of view about the ideology? Based on your opinion, how would you respond to the quote? Outline your essay Write your essay Good mind mapping tool: https://bubbl.us/mindmap

Introductory Paragraph Use your introductory paragraph to analyze what the quote is saying and to state your thesis. Analyzing the quote includes re-wording and identifying key terms in the quote, identifying the ideology/perspectives of the quote, and identifying other relevant ideologies/perspectives. A thesis statements is statement that usually appears at the end of the introductory paragraph of a paper, and it offers a concise summary of the main point or claim of the essay.

“Instead, society would be best served by embracing a perspective that balances nationalism and internationalism, while being cautious of ultra-nationalism. This is because a moderate position on nationalism and internationalism encourages minority groups to fight for equality while enjoying the benefits of international trade; while ultra-nationalism has been proven to only lead to violence and bloodshed.”

The 3 Body Paragraphs These paragraphs are used to present your arguments about why your thesis statement is sound and legitimate. The paragraph needs to include both your argument and evidence to support your argument (Ex. case studies and purposeful facts). The first 2 paragraphs are often used to state your positions, and the last paragraph is used to state the opposite position (which you argue is wrong to support your thesis).

Conclusion Your conclusion is used to restate your thesis statement and reaffirm your position on the quote. The conclusion is a way to wrap up your argument and make your position on the quote clear.
