Mission is why the church exists

I must stay at your house today.” “Zacchaeus, come down immediately. I must stay at your house today.”

“Zacchaeus, come down immediately. I must stay at your house today.” Jesus left Judea and went back once more to Galilee. Now he had to go through Samaria.

Now there was a Pharisee, a man named Nicodemus who was a member of the Jewish ruling council. He came to Jesus at night and said, “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the signs you are doing if God were not with him.” Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.” “How can someone be born when they are old?” Nicodemus asked. “Surely they cannot enter a second time into their mother’s womb to be born!”

Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit. Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit[b] gives birth to spirit. You should not be surprised at my saying, ‘You must be born again.’ The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.” John 3:1-8

“This is a way to empty your church, not fill it. But I actually think it is the only way to change our city and to do the exact thing God has called us to do. I think a handful of us living truly on mission could absolutely radically change our entire city for Christ. We want our parks to be safe. We want our school to be vibrant. We want our homes to be filled with joy. Our workplaces to be guided by integrity and fairness. Our poor cared for. Our elderly treated with respect. Our children to be innocent. Our detention centres to be empty and our churches to be filled. Not because they came to us but because we went to them. Because we were courageous enough to live by faith and be known by love and a voice of hope and to risk letting go of the things that we want in order to say “God, what do you want.” Andrew Gordon
