Chapter : 1 Trees for life 1-Section : 1 Reading A- Before you read answer the following questions. 1-what areas of Sudan have forests? Mostly all over Sudan. 2-What do we use trees for? Trees are used for building houses , firewood, furniture, …….. Etc.

Now read quickly and answer the questions. 1- Why do we need to take care of trees? Because trees can help us meet the needs of an increasing population and improve the environment.

2- What do these figures tell us? It tells us that we need to make sure that there is enough food for every one. 3- What causes the lost of forests? Using Them improperly.

c) Read the text again carefully and answer the questions. 1- What is the expected rise of the world population? It is expected to rise to 8,500 million by the year 2025. 2- Why is such a big population a problem? Because most of it takes place in developing countries.

b - Trees are a source of fodder for cattle and a source of certain substances foe medicine. c - The harvesting and processing of forests products creates employment, brings income and hard currency. d - Trees can protect the environment by reducing the erosion and making the soil rich.

e - The strong roots of the trees and shelter of the leaves stop the soil from being blown away by the wind. 5- Try to find words in the passage which are similar in meaning to the following: A ) very important = major b) Lack of food = malnutrition c) The gathering of crops= harvesting

d) Food for animals = fodder e) Dollars, sterling ..etc. = currency D) Discuss these questions 1- Do you think the area where you live has a healthy or poor environment? Why? Why not? I think it has a healthy environment because I live in Sennar State and there are many forests there.

2- Do you have a forest near your town or village 2- Do you have a forest near your town or village? If so what is it used for? Yes, we have a forest. We use it for fire wood, shelter and fodder. 3- How could you improve your local environment? We can improve our local environment by growing more trees and protect them from over cutting.
