How things fit together Feedback culture A culture of continual improvement At Hellyer College Teacher Learning Communities Collegial learning in small groups The space where the circles overlap, Formative Assessment, represents the learning space for our students and us. Formative assessment Review this diagram. Focus this afternoon on TLCs.

What is a TLC? Group of teachers, ideally 8-12, learning through collaboration, sharing and ongoing critical interrogation of teaching practices in line with professional standards. The focus is ongoing “job-embedded learning,” rather than one-shot professional development sessions. Learning is personalised and differentiated. There is an emphasis teacher leadership, along with their active involvement and deep commitment to school improvement efforts. Involves intensive reflection upon instructional practices as well as monitoring of outcomes to ensure success. http://www.educationworld.com/a_admin/best-practices-for-professional-learning-communities.shtml

Why TLCs? TLCs are more effective than individual champions in ensuring that school- wide pedagogical changes are sustainable. TLCs help develop teachers’ confidence and self-efficacy. Students achieve at higher levels in schools with positive TLCs. TLCs encourage and build effective leadership and management. When teachers across a school implement the same learnings and strategies, they create a consistent learning experience for students. (AITSL)

TLCs at Hellyer College 2017/18 5 groups each focussed on one of the five formative assessment strategies Time made available in staff workshops and end/start of year non contact time. Meeting monthly to: Share formative assessment technique(s) you have tried over the previous weeks and evidence of effectiveness (Data collected by your feedback buddy can be used as evidence of effectiveness.) Engage in new learning around the formative assessment strategy Plan personal action that you will undertake over the next four weeks. This might be a modification/refinement of a technique you have tried previously.

Clarifying Questions: In your table groups have a discussion of the information presented. Use the paper on the table to record questions about TLCs that collectively you are unable to answer. Print this slide. One per table of 5.

Mediative Questions: Individually respond in writing to these questions. In what ways might your participation in a TLC support you in learning about a formative assessment strategy and in implementing techniques into your practice? How might you use data collected by a feedback buddy in your TLC to assist you in gathering evidence relevant to your PDP goal? Print this page for people to record responses. One per person.
