Earthquakes Vocabulary

Earthquakes – Shaking of the ground by the sudden movements of tectonic plates at a fault Most common along plate boundaries

Stress – The force when two objects (tectonic plates) press, pull or push against one another

Fault – A fracture or break in the lithosphere where tectonic plates move past one another Classified by how rocks move Three Kinds: Normal Reverse Strike-Slip

Normal Fault – When the rock above the fault plane moves down, common near divergent boundaries Animation

Reverse Fault – When the rock above the fault plane moves upward, common near convergent boundaries Animation

Strike-Slip Fault – When the rock moves sideways against one another, common near transform boundaries Animation

Seismic Waves – Vibrations caused by Earthquakes Two Types: Primary Waves ( P waves ) Secondary Waves ( S waves )

Primary Waves – Fastest waves released by an earthquake; can travel through solids, liquids & gasses Move back and forth as they travel

Secondary Waves – Slowest waves released by an earthquake; can only travel through solids Move up and down as they travel

Seismograph – Records ground movements before, during and after an earthquake Can be used to help predict an earthquake

Focus – Place below ground where an earthquake starts

Epicenter – Point on Earth’s surface directly above the focus

Aftershock – A smaller earthquake that follows a larger one in the same area
