Adverb An Adverb is a word that modifies a verb, an adjective or another adverb. He sings sweetly. Here ‘sweetly 'is Adverb. It modifies the verb sings. He is very honest. Here ‘very’ is Adverb. It modifies the Adjective honest. He sings very sweetly. Here very and sweetly are Adverbs. Very modifies sweetly. My father is just over 60. Here just is adverb. It modifies the preposition over. The bell rang just after I had reached school. Here just is adverb. It modifies the conjunction ‘after.’ The story is very interesting. Here very is adverb. It modifies the participle ‘interesting.’ Certainly, he will come today. Here certainly is adverb. It modifies the sentence ‘he will come today.’

Classification of Adverb Simple Interrogative Relative Adverb Adverb is mainly of three kinds. They are. Simple Adverb 2. Interrogative Adverb 3. Relative or Conjunctive Adverb

Simple Adverb They live happily. The boy writes clearly. They eat rice thrice a day. A Simple Adverb modifies a word or a sentence.

Interrogative Adverb Where is he going? How do they look? Why is he angry? Interrogative Adverb is used to ask question.

Relative Adverb This is the house where he lives. Do you know when they play here? I don’t know why he is angry. When, where, how, why are Relative Adverb. They modify a word and join two clauses.

Kinds of Simple Adverb Adverb of Time Adverb of Place Adverb of Assertion Adverb of Manner Simple Adverb Adverb of Order Adverb of Degree Adverb of Cause Adverb of Number

Adverb of Time What is he doing now? We were going to school then. I wash my hands daily. Adverb of time shows when an action is done.

I am here. Adverb of Place She is inside. The are going up. Adverb of place shows where an action is done.

Prodip reads attentively. Adverb of Manner Prodip reads attentively. He is talking loudly. It is raining heavily. Adverb of Manner shows how an action is done.

Adverb of Degree She is too tired to move. I have to cook thrice a day. We are quite happy. Adverb of Degree shows how much or what extent an action is done.

Adverb of Number I have to cook thrice a day. He comes here frequently. Adverb of Number shows what extent an action is done.

Adverb of Order First, I have to save some money. Secondly, we have to call a meeting.

Adverb of Cause and Effect The child is so weak that it can not go out. He works hard so that he can lead a happy life. Adverb of Cause and Effect shows why an action is done.

Adverb of Assertion Yes, you are right. Really, he is a genius. Adverb of Assertion expresses affirmation and negation.

Difference between Adjective & Adverb He is an early riser. He gets up early. He is a fast runner. He runs fast. He is well . He has done well. It is a hard work. He works hard. It is a daily paper. He comes daily. It is safe. He came safe.
