Attempt at Reconcilliation Clash of Cultures Attempt at Reconcilliation Austin sent a letter back to Texas suggesting independence get underway. The Letter was intercepted and Austin was arrested.

Attempt at Reconcilliation Clash of Cultures Attempt at Reconcilliation After Austin was arrested Santa Anna over threw Mexico’s Constitution established in 1824 and made himself dictator.

Attempt at Reconcilliation Clash of Cultures Attempt at Reconcilliation Texans felt betrayed without a constitution to protect their rights. Santa Anna placed greater control over Texas which most Texans did not trust.

Struggle for Independence. During 1835 unrest grew in Texas and open conflict occasionally resulted. Santa Anna sent an army into Texas to punish Texans for criticizing him. (1)

Struggle for Independence. In October of 1835 Mexican troops tried to take a cannon In the town of Gonzalez. The Texans drove the Mexican army back and this was considered the first fight of the Texas Revolution. On the cannon was a white flag that said “Come and Take it.”

Struggle for Independence. In December of 1835 Texans were victorious in liberating San Antonio from control of a large Mexican force. Despite these victories many Texans left San Antonio thinking the war was over…

Struggle for Independence. The Alamo Battle In February 1836 Santa Anna marched his army into San Antonio and found a small Texan force barricaded in a mission called the Alamo.

Struggle for Independence. The Alamo Battle The Texans had cannons but no gun powder to use. The Texans had 180 men to Santa Anna’s several thousand.

Struggle for Independence. The Alamo Battle The Texans had brave leaders including Davey Crockett and Jim Bowie. The commander, Jim Travis was only 26 years old. Travis was able to send messages out through Mexican lines.

Struggle for Independence. The Alamo Battle Travis wrote messages to the people of Texas and the U.S. asking for help. He described the fighting in his messages that had already taken place.

Struggle for Independence. The Alamo Battle Travis said, “ the power of Santa Anna is to be met here, or in the colonies; we had better meet them here than to suffer a war of devastation to rage in our settlements.” (1)

Struggle for Independence. The Alamo Battle Travis was determined to hold the mission. Travis and his men held off attacks from Santa Anna for 12 days with only rifle fire.

Struggle for Independence. The Alamo Battle During the siege, 32 volunteers slipped through the Mexican lines and joined up with Travis. On March 6, 1836, Mexican cannon fire broke through the walls of the Alamo, launching an all out attack.

Several hundred Mexican soldiers were killed in the battle also. The Mexicans stormed the walls and crossed open land with many Mexicans being killed in the assault.
