Presentation transcript:

“Thrilla in Manila” Muhammad Ali was a boxer in the 1960’s and 70’s. Due to religious reasons he refused to be inducted into the U.S. Armed Forces during the height of the Vietnam war. He was stripped of his Boxing Heavyweight title and license to box in the U.S. Joe Frazier claimed the Heavyweight title from Ali. On September 30, 1975, HBO became the first TV network to continuously deliver signals via satellite when it showed the "Thrilla in Manila” boxing-match. The fight became something of a symbol of the country. Leading up to the fight, Ali (who had denounced the Vietnam War) became a symbol of the anti-establishment movement. Frazier became a symbol of the conservative, pro-war movement. On the night of the fight, there were riots in many U. S. cities, including Chicago, where a whole theater was almost torn apart by angry attendees who had just learned they would not be able to watch the fight on closed-circuit television. "It's gonna be a chilla, and a killa, and a thriller, when I get the Gorilla in Manila." The third fight between Joe Frazier and Muhammad Ali was held in Manila in the Philippine Islands. It was broadcast to international audiences all over the world. This fight is often ranked as the greatest boxing event of the 20th century. Boxing and Sports Events were the very first “Pay-Per-View” television events. These events became popular on cable TV companies like HBO. The Ali-Frazier fight proved that there was large audience interest. Ali won by a TKO in the 14th round. Some believe that injuries incurred during this fight led to Ali’s struggles with Parkinson's Disease.
