Why Public Dissemination of Science Matters?* Thank your funders Inspire critical thinking Stem the flow of bad information *David M. Eagleman, Journal of Neuroscience, 24 July 2013 «Innovation Potential of Advanced Laser Lights» workshop Sitges, 14-15/11/2017

Why Public Dissemination of Science Matters? Inform public policy Clarify what science is and is not Share the raw beauty of the scientific pursuit «Innovation Potential of Advanced Laser Lights» workshop Sitges, 14-15/11/2017

PUBLIC DISSEMINATION IN SCIENCE Different audiences to engage: government, the international scientific community, the industry, the ELI community The media and influencers are crucial intermediaries in reaching all audiences Different key messages Different communication channels Developing specific messaging Dissemination is sharing information to the right people, at the right time and engaging people in your activities. «Innovation Potential of Advanced Laser Lights» workshop Sitges, 14-15/11/2017

Dissemination Goals and Project Goals Dissemination activities are useful and effective when they are articulated, from the outset, in a communication strategy, to the objectives of the project so that they ultimately become communication goals. They should be implemented within the strategy and communication plan through specific tools. So, the purpose of dissemination is to support and facilitate the achievement of the project objectives. «Innovation Potential of Advanced Laser Lights» workshop Sitges, 14-15/11/2017

Audiences and Drivers in dissemination to ELI* Governments and policy-makers: Scientific excellence, Economic and social impact, Return on investment, Job creation National and international scientifc community: Influence on global scientifc agenda, Peer recognition, Funding, Belonging to a network of shared interests Media and infuencers: Frontier science,Cutting-edge technology, Public interest, Authoritative source Local community: Economic benefit Tourism General Public: Curiosity Impact Wonder Knowledge for empowerment Industry: Innovation, Knowledge transfer, Recruitment, Job creation, Return on investment Collaboration Before you start editing the slides of your talk change to the Master Slide view: Menu button “View” > Slide Master: Edit the following items: 1. «Innovation Potential of Advanced Laser Lights» workshop What are the tools...? Organization of Events / Conferences, workshops, seminars on a set theme Organization of Q & A press meetings Media Relations – articles, TV appearances (according to a media plan) Monthly monitoring of occurrences (with negative tone, neutral, positive) Press releases especially during the ELI-NP events, incorporating the agenda of ELI events into the communication agenda (as milestones) Multichannel social media campaigns (Facebook, LinkedIn…) Video (on an editorial plan) Content for the site (with an editorial plan) «Innovation Potential of Advanced Laser Lights» workshop Sitges, 14-15/11/2017

Goal: Technolgy Transfer. What drivers? Governments and policy-makers: Scientific excellence, Economic and social impact, Return on investment, Job creation National and international scientifc community: Influence on global scientifc agenda, Peer recognition, Funding, Belonging to a network of shared interests Media and infuencers: Frontier science,Cutting-edge technology, Public interest, Authoritative source Local community: Economic benefit Tourism General Public: Curiosity Impact Wonder Knowledge for empowerment Industry: Innovation, Knowledge transfer, Technology Transfer, Recruitment, Job creation, Return on investment, Collaboration Before you start editing the slides of your talk change to the Master Slide view: Menu button “View” > Slide Master: Edit the following items: 1. Obstacles in the RIs – Industry collaboration THE RIs perspective (1): 1. „Companies are not familiar with the research steps, the timescale of research activities and the related costs”; 2. „The timescale of a research project implemented with companies funded by public funds is not adapted to the needs of the companies (project evaluation period and duration of contract negociation are too long and companies lose their interest in participation in such collaboration”; 3. Researchers are not familiar with the evaluation of production costs, feasability studies and other financial related aspects which are crucial when it comes to technological transfer. *The result of questionaires into the RI2 Integrate Project that aims to improve the framework conditions for innovation that exploit the economic development potential and to better the integration of the operation of the EU’s excellent R&D Infrastructure investment projects. «Innovation Potential of Advanced Laser Lights» workshop Sitges, 14-15/11/2017

Obstacles – The RI perspectives*: 4. Companies are generally interested in obtaining a solution which only needs to be implemented into their production, while up-scaling it is not always obvious and requires additional research and funding 5. Low interest of the national SMEs* (large companies not interested at all) to develop novel innovative products in cooperation with research entities or for technological transfer *small-medium sized companies THE RIs perspective (2): «Innovation Potential of Advanced Laser Lights» workshop Sitges, 14-15/11/2017

Obstacles in the RIs – Industry collaboration The Industry perspective: 1. Time and financing (time to long to enter to the market and funding not enough); 2. Potential doubtful quality; 3. High costs, including for services; 4. Long duration of research activities; 5. Skilled personnel too dificult to find; 6. Not enough developed competencies in the industry; «Innovation Potential of Advanced Laser Lights» workshop Sitges, 14-15/11/2017

Obstacles in the RIs – Industry collaboration The Intermediares and NGO’s perspective: 1. Bureaucracy 2. Unpredictable funding 3. Low institutional collaboration; 4. Low flexibility including in communication 5. Reluctance to more open collaboration; 6. Frequent changes in procedures; 7. More anf more complicated access to funding; 8. Some national research funding schemes not equally available for NGOs; «Innovation Potential of Advanced Laser Lights» workshop Sitges, 14-15/11/2017

Obstacles in the RIs – Industry collaboration Some conclusions… 1. Weak political and administrative management: bureaucracy, frequent changes in procedures, unpredictable funding in time, continuity and volume, slow institutional collaboration, unadequated funding shemes for customer needs; 2. Not taking enough into consideration the partners' needs and possibilities: see point 1, 2 and 3 plus the lack of real knowledge of collaboration actors on procedures, reglementation and specificities in research, education, administration, management and economy; 3. Limited flexibility due to a culture of corectly spending vis a vis an approach on result usefulness oriented spending; «Innovation Potential of Advanced Laser Lights» workshop Sitges, 14-15/11/2017

«Innovation Potential of Advanced Laser Lights» workshop Solutions? RIs could be more pro active in valorization of their knowledge capital and their research results and more involved in their relation with society and particular with industry and regional development. Research should implement many steps to come closer to industry but this is not possible if the political decision makers are not aware that without: high quality and skilled human resources, an adequate, predictable public funding in time, continuity and volume, adequate instruments as for instance pilot lines for small scale production, a professional management trained in high competition environment a real effective and fruitful colaboration research - industry-society A BETTER COMMUNICATION OF MORE APPROPRIATE KEY MESSAGES «Innovation Potential of Advanced Laser Lights» workshop Sitges, 14-15/11/2017

Communication could be a key! The Ris could be: 1. more proactive towards valorization of their knowledge capital and of the results of their research and 2. more involved in their relation with society in particular with industry and in the regional development «Innovation Potential of Advanced Laser Lights» workshop Sitges, 14-15/11/2017

Communication can be a key Communication can be a key that must and should be used to achieve ELI objectives by thinking and creating the right key messages that reach the good audience before they are disseminated in the public space. The process of finding the right key messages is also a way to find solutions Once defined, the key messages can be multiplied on different channels «Innovation Potential of Advanced Laser Lights» workshop Sitges, 14-15/11/2017
