SOUTH AFRICA South Africa gained independence from Great Britain in 1910. That independence was only for white South Africans however. South Africa went through a recent period of time similar to our civil rights movement. Segregation for them was called Apartheid.

NELSON MANDELA HE WAS SOUTH AFRICA’S MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. HE SPENT 27 YEARS IN PRISON FOR HIS ANTI-APARTHEID PROTESTS. HE EVNTUALLY BECAME SOUTH AFRICA’S PRESIDENT; SERVING ONE TERM THEM RETIRING.

African National Congress Formed by black South Africans in an effort to gain equal treatment for the non-white population They were able to get the international community to place an EMBARGO on South Africa Ruling party in South Africa since 1994 Notable member:

African Union Things it wants to accomplish: Build strong economies in Africa Encourage democracy for the newly independent countries Safeguard human rights Civil Rights Stopping Genocide Humanitarian efforts (clean water, stop spread of disease)

ECONOMIC SANCTIONS EMBARGO!!!!!! The US and Great Britain helped South Africa’s anti-apartheid movement by imposing economic sanctions on South Africa until they did away with apartheid. EMBARGO!!!!!!

F.W. DE KLERK F.W. DE KLERK WAS ELECTED PRESIDENT OF SOUTH AFRICA IN 1989. HE OPPOSED APARTHEID, AND WORKED TO SEE IT ENDED. SOUTH AFRICA REWROTE ITS CONSTITUTION GIVING EQUAL RIGHTS TO ALL SOUTH AFRICANS.
