Our math curriculum is based on a newly adopted set of standards by the state of Iowa known as the Common Core standards. In the classroom, we will be taking a more hands on approach to learning by creating a student-centered learning environment. The new approach will allow students the time to obtain deeper conceptual knowledge of the concepts as well as develop skills in critical thinking, communication, creativity, and collaboration. The changes in the classroom instruction and learning will also mean a few changes seen at home. Students will not be coming home with as much homework as previously. We have moved away from the traditional textbook. It is important that students are organized with materials, handouts, and note-taking. As a class, we will be building a binder which can be used as a reference guide for assignments and studying. Iowa Core Geometry

Strive for less than Five! ARCONIC Foundation and United Way of the QCA are partnering to encourage students and staff to miss less than 5 days of school in 2018-19. Missing two days a month equates to 18 absences a year and defines a chronically absent student.

Resource – It is my hope that any student struggling will use 8th period resource to receive extra help on difficult concepts. I am here everyday 8th period (except Fridays due to teacher collaboration time) to provide additional help to all students. We will be assigning struggling learners to a geometry study table 8th period as needed. Students will not have the option to attend but will be required if they are struggling with concepts. ALEKS Placement Test ALEKS math placement exam   Before registering for classes your freshman year at most 2 or 4 year schools, you will be required to take an ALEKS math placement exam. Click the link for more information on this online placement exam. https://www.aleks.com/highered/ppl The exam consists of 25-30 open-ended (no multiple choice) math questions covering the basics of algebra, geometry and algebra 2. There is no time limit, but you are also not able to use a calculator. If your score does not place you into one of the school’s college math courses, you will be required to take a college prep math course. Unfortunately, this course will not count towards your graduation requirement. ALEKS Placement Test

A majority of students in high school have come to rely heavily on their calculators. For that reason, we have created an ALEKS pre-test to help you prepare. To do well on the exam, you should feel confident completing these questions without the use of notes or a calculator. We have placed the questions into sections (major topics) and have also provided an answer key. In addition, near the end of the school year the math department will hold study sessions during 8th hour resource to help practice these concepts and to get any questions answered.
