Presentation transcript:

TED Talk: “how America’s public schools keep kids in poverty”- due Friday OPTIONS: - Do at home (video is on my blog – you can access on computer or phone) - Stay after school on Thursday - During B lunch on Thursday ASSIGNMENT: - Complete the front of the graphic organizer, evaluating the TED Talk. - Complete the back of the graphic organizer, making connections to Unit 1 and to The Other Wes Moore.

The Other Wes Moore: Part 1 Reading Quiz All you need is your writing utensil. Please record all your responses on the answer sheet. You have 35 minutes 

Today’s argument focus

Directions 1) Read the prompt carefully. 2) Begin reading the sources. Formulate your opinion. 2) Begin reading the sources. Consider which sources will help support your opinion and be used as evidence. Decide on one source that goes against your opinion but could be used as a counterargument. Annotate each source, specifically marking words/phrases/ideas that you might want to use. 3) Outline your argument. Use the “Creating your synthesis argument” graphic organizer to help you. It does not have to be detailed or in complete sentences – it’s more about organizing your overall idea. 4) Write your draft (in this case, just one solid paragraph) 

What is a synthesis essay? A synthesis is a written discussion that draws on one or more sources. It follows that your ability to write syntheses depends on your ability to infer relationships among sources - essays, articles, fiction, and also nonwritten sources, such as lectures, interviews, observations. What is a process paper? In this situation, a process paper is an essay that moves through every step of the writing process: 1) Pre-Writing 2) Outlining 3) Rough Drafting 4) Revising 5) Editing 6) Publishing

Unit 1 Synthesis Process Paper: The American Dream What am I arguing?  Whatever you want, as long as it is related to the American Dream. What am I synthesizing?  As many texts from Unit 1 as possible. How many paragraphs do I have to have?  That’s up to you. How many sentences do I have to have per paragraph?  The accepted length for an honors 11th grade course would be 8-10. However, they may vary in length and sometimes you might need more. When’s it due?  Wednesday 2/7 at the BEGINNING of class. Bring a typed hard copy – no emails.

Outline sample The thesis is clearly marked above the beginning of the outline. The paragraphs are structured by roman numeral. For every I there is a II, for every A there is a B, for every i there is a ii. You can choose to provide the source or specific quote or example you will use, or simply mark its spot to show where it will go.

Outline sample Your outline is due by Monday no later than 3:30 pm. You may turn it in early. You may bring me a hard copy or send a copy to my gmail account. As long as you meet this first process by the deadline, you will earn a 100. The other alternative is to turn it in late or not at all and earn a 0. The purpose of the outline is not to write every word/sentence that will go into your final draft. The purpose is to prove that you have planned out the main points of your argument, decided where you will insert support (and how), and focus on a logical organization.
