Presentation transcript:

Our topic is Stargazers In Year 5 we will be learning to: Term: Autumn 1 Maths: Taught using ‘Maths- No Problem!’ This term will include investigations using: Numbers to 1 000 000 Place Value Rounding Number Patterns Computing: Design and create a simple game using Scratch. Engage: Climb on board our space shuttle and launch into space. Travel through the cosmos and imagine yourself as the next Tim Peake! Spoken Language: - Share, explore and develop ideas. - Take part in collaborative conversations. - Participate in presentations and debates. Writing: Learn about myths, before proceeding to write their own Moon inspired account, responding to the question - Does a man really live on the moon? For our newspaper reports, we will be focussing on Space Pioneers! Science: Explore the planets in our Solar System. Research the relationships between the Earth, the Sun and the Moon. - Understand what gravity is. - Take scientific measurements. - Record and analyse results. PE: Taught using ‘Real P.E,’ a unique child-centred approach to engage and challenge all children. History: Learn about significant individuals who have influenced the UK and the wider world including Sir Isaac Newton. Geography: Look at aerial images of the Earth and identify geographical features. Our topic is Stargazers In Year 5 we will be learning to: Innovate: Design a rocket for the UK Space Agency. Your rocket will be tested for robustness, aesthetics and height or distance travelled. You will need to record the data from your test missions. Express: Parents will be invited to a Year 5 Science Fair to see all the children’s hard work! PSHE: Learn to understand and assess risks as well as developing strategies to keep themselves safe. Music: Learn to compose, perform and critique music. They will learn to play as an ensemble in the Gamelan Orchestra (a musical instrument from Indonesia). Art: Block printing techniques to create a lunar chart which will illustrate the different phases of the moon. DT: Experiment with textiles, using a range of stitching and layering techniques to recreate the surface of the moon.

Things to explore with your child… PE: Our PE days are Tuesday and Thursday. As the winter months approach, please include longer layers in PE kits so that your child can comfortably take part in all activities. Creative Zone: Imagine an alien space ship has crashed in your back garden. Write a story about what happens next! Design and create an astronaut space helmet using junk materials. Write an advert to go with it to persuade people to buy your design. Keep a Moon diary over the course of a lunar month. Draw the shape of the Moon each night, finding out and recording the correct term for each lunar phase. Reading: As a class we will be reading ‘Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator’ by Roald Dahl. We promote the importance of reading and would actively encourage children to read at home. Try asking your child questions about what they have read so far in order to check their understanding. Maths: Help children learn their times tables by revising these as often as possible. Why not challenge them to see how quickly they can recall facts at random? Ask your children to tell you the time at different points of the day. Use your TV guide – how long is this programme on for? What time does the next programme start? Writing: This half-term we will be writing myths about the moon and creating our own space aliens. Can you work with your child to create a new myth about the moon that they could write about? Please wherever possible, support your child with their spellings. Dates: Topic Celebration Friday 19th October Please come and see the space models that the children have designed. Parents Evening 17th and 18th October 2018 Weekly Practice: We will be sending weekly spelling lists home for children to revise, these are due in every Wednesday. Your child has been issued with a log-in for Times Tables Rock Stars, which is a carefully sequenced programme of daily times tables practice. Each week concentrates on a different times table. Please encourage your child to access this at home.
