According to theories and research… Who is the primary figure an infant will form an attachment with? The mother

But what about the father? Fathers are typically ignored in the literature with regards to being an infants primary attachment figure Read “news article” on page 102 of the Black mask What do we think this story is telling us about the role of the father?

In society, we have social roles What are social roles? A series of behaviours which are expected of an individual who occupies specific positions in society For example; What do you expect of a teacher? What do you expect of a pupil?

We have social roles for parents… Think of the stereotypic social roles of parents The mother? The father?

We have social roles for parents… In previous years, mothers were expected to cook, clean, tidy, do laundry and stay at home to raise the children Whereas, males were expected to be the breadwinner – work to get money for the family, protect the family, be the “man of the house”

Do we think this is still the case? While this was the norm in the past In todays society this is not the case 10% of parents who care for the children while the other parent goes to work are male This is low considering females make up the latter 90% However, it does show males are playing a bigger role in parenting than ever before

Misconceptions about the role of the father Traditionally fathers have been seen to play a minor role in the parenting of their children Some would say males are biologically unsuitable to raise children Think of the social roles of the past!

However… Recent researchers suggests it can also be the father who is the primary attachment figure

What are the stereotypes of fathers? Playmates rather than caregivers Gieger (1996) Fathers play is more exciting than that of mothers This suggests fathers are playmates, rather than caregiver… while mothers are the nurturing, affectionate parent

This is because… Lamb 1987 found…. Children often prefer interacting with the father when they are in a positive emotional state and seeking stimulation Children prefer mothers when distressed and seeking comfort. While this suggests Fathers are preferred as playmates, it does outline only in certain conditions

There are a number of factors which influence the relationship between fathers and children Go to page 107 in the Black Mask On a piece of paper, you are to outline each factor

What happens when father is attachment figure? Gieger 1996 found children with secure attachments with their father have.. Better relationships with their peers Less problematic behaviors More able to regulate their emotions This illustrates the positive influence fathers can have on developmental outcomes

Those with poor relationships with their father Five times as likely to live in poverty and commit crime Nine times as likely to drop out of school 20 times as likely to be in prison
