Uses of AS It is a conjunction and introduces a clause, especially with verbs of speaking and knowing. –As you know, as I said, as she expected, as I thought… Example: Do exactly as I say. It is used in comparisons: as …as. Example: Hes not as talented as his brother (is). It is used to talk about a job or function. Example: She works as a fashion model (She is a model). AS is also a linking word: –AS + IF = AS + THOUGH: It is used before a clause to say how something seems. Example: Tom looks really awful. He looks as if hes been up all night. –AS SOON AS = Immediately after. –AS LONG AS = If, on condition that. –AS = While. –AS = Because. –AS WELL= Too. Uses of LIKE It is a preposition and is used before a noun or pronoun with the meaning: similar to, the same as. Example: He fought like a madman (but hes not a madman) Example: Shes a teacher, like me. –You can also say like (sbody/sthing) doing something. Example: It sounds like a baby crying. Sometimes LIKE = For example, such as. Example: Some sports, like motor racing, can be dangerous. In American English, and sometimes in informal spoken British English, LIKE can be used before a clause. Example: Lets do it, like we agreed.
