Puffing Boron into the Divertor During Plasma Operation as a means of Boronization Aaron Bader Dec 13, 2006 Ideas Forum ‘07

Strong recycling flows exist in the divertor region 4% 2% ? 15% 90% In his seminar at C-Mod, Jim Strachan conjectures that 90% of carbon impurities injected in the outer divertor get recycled back to the outer divertor. Also, it is believed that on C-Mod the boron wears off in specific regions of the divertor shelf, degrading stored energy

Puff boron into the divertor There is currently no good way to boronize the surfaces that matter during plasma operation Puffing boron into the divertor can be a means of replenishing the boron supply that gets worn off. The puff can either be diborane gas or dust particles. This can also test the theory that the boron wears off where the field lines from the RF strike the divertor. We would require a new puffing system and this is probably not feasible in the next campaign. The experiment would involve installing a boron puffing system in the divertor region that corresponds to a certain RF antenna. Then plasma shots can be run with that antenna running, a different antenna running and with no antennas running to see if there are differences in stored energy
