Early Childhood and School Readiness: What’s Neighborhood Got To Do With It? Phase I Findings from the Memphis Site NNIP-Casey Cross-Site Initiative November 2008 Contact Phyllis Betts at pbetts@memphis.edu

Key Findings: Memphis Neighborhood level risks and assets: poorly articulated in early childhood-school readiness conversation Confounding factor: high rates of neighborhood mobility Assets and funding streams: underestimated, siloed, non-strategic, and geographically anachronistic Memphis and Shelby County: data-rich but poor on issue framing and dissemination of actionable knowledge

Where do we go from here? Framing: Neighborhood Risk and Asset Zones Asset mapping: collaborative data collection Strategic working groups: e.g. site-based services

NNIP: Value Added Neighborhood Risk and Asset Mapping Drill-down to neighborhood level indicators Template for asset mapping Messaging for neighborhood risks and assets
