HISTORY Druids (друиды) first celebrated Halloween many years ago in Ireland (Ирландия). It is the holiday of the end of autumn and the beginning of winter. The Druids believed that Halloween was the night of the witches (ведьм).

They were afraid of the witches so they put on different clothes (одежда) and painted their faces to send away (прогнать) the evil creatures (злых созданий). They also placed food and small gifts (подарки) near the doors of their houses for the witches.

Another part of the festival was a lantern (светильник) made of a pumpkin (тыква). His name is Jack-o-Lantern. People believed that all pumpkins leaved (покидают) their gardens to dance in the streets.

Now it is celebrated mostly by children Now it is celebrated mostly by children. Dressed very strangely (странно), children take part in the festival. Groups of children visited nearby houses and asked for lollipops. They say: "Trick or treat! Trick or treat!“ (Угощенье или шутка!)

Trick-or-treat Children go in costumes from house to house, asking for treats (угощение) such as candy (сладости) or sometimes money, with the question "Trick or treat?"

FOOD Because it’s an autumn festival there are a lot of apples. So the most popular food is Candy Apple. They put the whole (целое) apple in caramel.
