Inspections

Purpose Inspections should: Motivate each cadet to “wear my uniform properly” Raise the standards Evaluate competence Judge for Cadet of the Month/Year awards, if appropriate Inspections should not: Grill cadets Haze cadets by public criticism or humiliation

Inspections should also… …Be speedy!

Initial Formation Normal distance and interval Standing at parade rest Flight commander posted six paces to the front of, centered on, and facing away from the flight

Inspector Approaches The flight commander will: Command, “Flight, ATTENTION” Salute and verbally greet the inspector Upon receiving orders: About face “Open ranks, MARCH” Align the elements

After Aligning the Elements Flight commander marches forward until he is three paces past the guide Performs a left face (down line) Commands, “Ready, FRONT”

Reporting In Flight commander takes one step forward, and performs a right face Salutes the inspector “Sir, [Alpha] Flight is prepared for inspection.”

Beginning the Inspection The inspector: Inspects flight commander Requests flight commander to accompany Flight commander: Left face (Down line) “Second, third, and fourth elements, Parade REST” Half left in marching to join the inspector

During the Inspection Flight commander remains one pace to the right, one pace to the rear of the inspector throughout the inspection Advancing between cadets: Right face in marching, and in-place halt…

The “Duck-Walk” 4.5.3.1. The movement is executed by pivoting 90 degrees to the right on the ball of the right foot, simultaneously stepping over the right foot with the left foot and placing the left foot parallel to the rank being inspected. Then advance one short step with the right foot, and place the right foot pointed toward the flight. Next bring the left heel into the right heel, and once again reassume the position of attention. The upper portion of the body remains at the position of attention, and the arm swing is suspended throughout when inspecting the front of each rank.

During the Inspection After inspecting the last cadet in an element, the inspector will march behind the element and briefly inspect the back. The flight commander should follow approximately two paces behind him, stopping when he stops. Element leaders will give appropriate commands to their elements. After inspecting the rear of the final element, the inspector and flight commander will march to the front, by way of the element leaders.

Concluding the Inspection Halt three paces past the guide Left face (Down line) “Flight, ATTENTION” One step forward Right face Receive comments

Post-Inspection Salute the inspector Left face “Close ranks, MARCH” Post in front of flight again Relax!
