Dilemma In a collaboration one of the other group’s researchers insists in being noted as a co-author in one of your promising papers. You feel that he did not contribute at all, however he is responsible for a travel grant you intend to use in the future.

Introduction In a scientific publication, everyone of the authors should be aware and responsible for the whole text. Realistically not everyone can contribute equally.

Our AM table Researcher (Me) Other researcher in question Collaboration Scientific Community Public Enlist as co-author + better chance for travel grant - lie + authorship - bad conscience + good atmosphere +/- one more author -lie - tricked - inefficient allocation of resources + popularity - paying unnecessary people Don't enlist as co-author + honesty - worse chance for travel grant - conflict - no publication +/- one less author - conflict shines a bad light on community + better use of public money - less popularity Mention in acknowledgment +marginal reputation gain

Our solution Being inclusive does not hurt anyone in the immediate situation and was therefore chosen as our solution
