The Paradox of the American Dream

The American Dream… Is based on the notion that all people are afforded the opportunity to overcome debilitating circumstances in order to live a better life. No matter the race, religion, ethnicity, or gender. From its inception, America has been peopled by immigrants who believe in the idea of succeeding, overcoming, achieving, sometimes even escaping one’s fate in another country, and building a new life.

3 Main Beliefs: Optimism and continual progress of life Independence and the importance of the individual Opportunity to start fresh - America as a New Eden

The Dream Becomes a Nightmare This hopeful view of America, this “land of opportunity,” has its DARK side— racial strife disillusionment discrimination corruption marginalization materialism

How has the dream evolved?

The American Dream Paradox As people come to America in pursuit of their personal dreams, they ultimately destroy the hopes, dreams, and ambitions of others Paradoxically, the American Dream contradicts itself as it reveals a certain degree of truth. America is viewed as a “land of opportunity” but at what cost to Americans?
