European Exploration Vocabulary

expedition ~ a trip that explorers would take in order to explore a new land or find something new

obstacle ~ when something gets in your way when you are trying to achieve something; a hardship

accomplishment ~ to achieve something

route ~ a way to get from one place to another; there are land routes and water routes

sponsor ~ when a person or country pays for someone to do something

navigation ~ the act, or process of finding the way to get to a place when traveling in a ship, plane, etc.

circumnavigate ~ to sail all the way around something (the world)

benefactor ~ a person who gives money or other help to a person or cause

explorer ~ a person who explores an unfamiliar area; an adventurer

voyage ~ a long journey involving travel by sea

vessel ~ a ship or large boat

inhabitants ~ a person or animal that lives in or occupies a place

squire ~ a young nobleman acting as an attendant to a knight before becoming a knight himself

conquistador ~ a conqueror

rebellion ~ the action or process of resisting authority, control, or convention

commissioned ~ given an order for, or authorization for, the production of something

territory ~ an area of land under jurisdiction of a ruler or state

tyranny ~ cruel and oppressive government or rule
