THE ROUTES OF CONTAMINATION Who can remember the routes of contamination? How are the routes of contamination related to hand washing? If you do not wash your hands properly you could contaminate your food or water and get sick. Adapted from THE ROUTES OF CONTAMINATION

What is needed to wash hands? Soap Running water Clean towel What can be done for running water if there is no faucet in the house? Use a water pitcher or cup to pour the water over you hands. Never put your hands directly into the water recipient, this will dirty the water. What can be done if there is no clean towel? Shake your hands in the air to dry them

1 2 3 5 4 What are the critical steps to hand washing? Wet your hands. Lather the soap well. 3 Wash between fingers, under nails, wrists, palms and top of hands. 5 Dry hands with a clean towel or shake them in the air. 4 Rinse your hands well.

Let’s wash our hands! I need 5 volunteers Conduct handwashing activity according to MIPAE: Ask for 5 volunteers (mix of adults and kids) -Put paint on the hands of the 5 volunteers -Explain the paint represents germs -The 5 volunteers then go around the classroom and shake hands with the other volunteers, spreading the “germs” -Once everyone has germs, they will practice washing their hands at the hand washing station, using the proper steps
