East vs. West The transfer of the Roman capital to Constantinople inevitably brought mistrust, rivalry, and even jealousy to the relations of the two great sees, Rome and Constantinople. West adopted Latin, East remained Greek

Rome Pope Leo I (440 -461) Leo was called “the great” Most important accomplishment – And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven; and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven and whatsoever thou shalt loose of earth shall be loosed in heaven. What is true of Peter is true also of his successors. Claims to be St. Peter’s successor & head of the universal Church. "The care of the universal Church should converge towards Peter's one seat, and nothing anywhere should be separated from its Head." Makes Bishop in Constantinople mad
