Student Organization President Training 2015-2016 Welcome to President Training. Introduce Self. Today we will cover some important parts of your role as a treasurer in your student organization, provide some leadership development opportunities, and allow you to connect with fellow treasurers.

A few quick reminders Sign – in Ask questions Slides will be sent Use your handout Participate! A few important reminders before we dive in   Please make sure to sign in! This is the only way that we can credit your attendance for being here I will pause to provide space for questions throughout the training but please also feel free to ask questions as they come up. I ask that you think about if your question will be relevant to others in the room. If it is – great! If you think it’s more personal, come on up and chat with me afterwards These slides will be sent to you after training, so do not feel like you need to write everything down. However, we invite you to take as many notes throughout You should have had picked up a handout when you came in. We will be doing quite a bit of reflection throughout this session and this handout provides useful space for you to take notes so please take advantage of it.

As such, we want to make sure you get to know them. Please turn to your neighbor and share your name, organization, your standing (undergrad/grad/prof), year, major/program, and a fun fact   Okay now that you have a buddy for the next hour – let’s jump in!

ONLINE TRAINING Key Roles Registration basics Funding and finances Resources Please note that today’s training is one portion of your training requirement. You will also need to complete the online portion of training if you haven’t already.   In the online module, we covered Key roles in your organization, including your role as treasurer, the role of the president, and of the advisor Basics of student organization annual registration Student organization funding, including managing budgets, incomes, and expenses Resources available to you as a student leader I would like to kick us off with an opportunity for anyone who has completed online training to ask questions they might have about the online training content

Some of you may have heard about the Student Organization Success Framework. This is a resource developed by Student Activities that identifies areas that your student organizations can grow and work towards success in.   The framework identifies 20 outcomes in three areas: individual, group, and community. It is a resource available to your organizations to assess what you are strong at, where you would to grow, and identify what university resources will help you get stronger. As a part of training today you will be introduced to those outcomes and we will dive deeper into some of them and how they relate to your leadership and your role in your organization. Please check out the Student Organization Success Framework page on our website for more information about the Framework and how it can help your organization

Individual Outcomes Consciousness of Self; Leadership Efficacy; Wellness; Social Perspective Taking; Social Change Behaviors We will start with the individual outcomes   Consciousness of Self Leadership Efficacy Wellness Social Perspective Taking Social Change Behaviors Through this next section of our training, we will focus in on three of those outcomes: Consciousness of Self, Leadership Efficacy, and Social Perspective Taking

Consciousness of Self The organization’s ability to promote general self-awareness in leaders and members particularly the beliefs, values, attitudes and emotions that motivate one to take action So as we mentioned, Consciousness of Self is “The organization’s ability to promote general self-awareness in leaders and members particularly the beliefs, values, attitudes and emotions that motivate one to take action”   Essentially, this is all about self-awareness and how your own self-awareness plays into your role in your organization. So on that note, it’s time for your first activity. If you are not next to someone, please move close enough to a partner at this time and go ahead and introduce yourself.

Consciousness of Self How will your role help you grow Greatest Strengths Areas for Growth How will your strengths help your role How will your role help you grow I am going to give you a few minutes to reflect on your own about the questions on the board. There is also space to write these answers on your handout   Now that you’ve had a few minutes, please find a partner and share your answers. Look for place where you all might overlap and areas where you might differ. Great thank you for sharing!

Leadership Efficacy The organization’s ability to foster members’ internal belief that they will be successful when engaging in leadership It’s not only important that you know your strengths and areas for growth, but that you believe those strengths will help you perform well in your role. As such, we now turn to Leadership Efficacy, or “The organization’s ability to foster members’ internal belief that they will be successful when engaging in leadership”

Leadership Efficacy I ran for/applied for/accepted this role because: Past experiences that will allow me to be successful are: My leadership role models who show me success are: I like to receive praise and support by: I will know I have done well when I feel like: We are going to do a little bit more individual reflection. Along the idea of your belief that you will be successful in your role, we want you to write your purpose statements for you in your role. Please feel free to use the prompts on the screen/on your handouts, or free form it if that works better for you.   Please take a minute to share this with your partner Ask for a few people to share

Social Perspective Taking The organization’s culture of taking another person’s point of view and/or accurately inferring the thoughts and feelings of others The last individual outcome we want to introduce is Social Perspective Taking which is “The organization’s culture of taking another person’s point of view and/or accurately inferring the thoughts and feelings of others”   We are not going to put this into practice just yet, but remember this concept later in the training when we are doing some more activities.

Goals and Purpose A strong articulation of, and commitment to, a mission that clarifies the priorities of the organization, as well as goals that identify key areas of focus for a given year The Goals and Purpose outcome for your organization should be “A strong articulation of, and commitment to, a mission that clarifies the priorities of the organization, as well as goals that identify key areas of focus for a given year.” This should serve as the backbone of your organization and everything that you do throughout the year.

Membership Recruitment and Retention The process of selecting and welcoming new members, as well as retaining members for organizational growth and sustainability Something we know a lot of our organizations spend time thinking about is recruitment and retention. We define recruitment and retention as “The process of selecting and welcoming new members, as well as retaining members for organizational growth and sustainability”

Membership Recruitment and Retention Recruiting New Members With your partner, we want to spend a little bit of time brainstorming. Please spend a few minute thinking about a few creative ways to connect with and recruit new members. Please think beyond the Student Involvement Fairs and Mini-Involvement Fairs   Ask for a few people to share

Membership Recruitment and Retention Retaining Members The second half of this outcome is just as important though! What good is it to recruit members if they don’t stay. With your partner also please spend some time brainstorming ways that you might successfully retain your members.   Ask for a few people to share Make sure they identify: formal and informal recognition, committee involvement, structured friendship

Leadership Transitions The organization’s process for a transition for leaders and members that fosters emerging leaders as well as prepares incoming leaders and the organization for long-term success Finally, we want to spend some time considering leadership transitions. Transitions are “The organization’s process for a transition for leaders and members that fosters emerging leaders as well as prepares incoming leaders and the organization for long-term success”   Now, how many people in here thing they received a good transition? We know that this is one area where organizations consistently struggle across the board

Leadership Transitions You are transitioning out of your role as president and need to prepare records for your successor. What should you include in those transition records? What might you include in a transition meeting? What other transition steps are necessary? What is your role in facilitating transitions across your organization? As such, we want you to spend some time with your partner considering how you might make transitions more effective   Ask for a few people to share Make sure they identify: Calendar of the year; important people; regular meeting times; successful programs; recruitment events; ways to work with others

Advising Partnerships The collaborative process through which student organization leaders and advisor(s) are partners in meeting the purpose and goals of the organization and larger university As a key role in your organization, your advisor should be one of your best allies. This is also a relationship that requires much care. That is why it is useful for us to spend time thinking about “The collaborative process through which student organization leaders and advisor(s) are partners in meeting the purpose and goals of the organization and larger university”

Connection to and Belonging in the Student Org Community The organization’s ability to foster members’ sense of belonging and investment in their organization and the student organization community, as well as shape the student organization into a diverse and inclusive community where students can find their place We have defined Connection to and Belonging in the Student Organization Community as “The organization’s ability to foster members’ sense of belonging and investment in their organization and the student organization community, as well as shape the student organization into a diverse and inclusive community where students can find their place.” Though we spend a lot of time thinking about our role in the Ohio State community, it is also important to recognize that you all are a part of a student organization community filled with interesting programs, dedicated leaders, and diverse interests.
