Do Now: Employee’s of the Twenty-First Century *Answer in complete sentences. What skills are necessary for the modern employee? Circle those skills that you have already acquired. What skills do you think you will have to gain to become more marketable in the modern and/or future workplace?

Employee’s of the Twenty-First Century Objective: To discuss and analyze the workplace attitudes most in demand.

Employee’s for the Twenty-First Century Read the top half of page 242. Obviously the story above is false. However, it is quite possible to make an educated guess (hypothesis) about the future’s general direction. Trends are already becoming stronger for technology in our society.

Employee’s of the Twenty-First Century: Activity 243 Answer the questions on Activity 243. Give yourself three points for an ‘A’, two points for a ‘B’, and one point for a ‘C’. Add up all your points and put it at the bottom of Activity 243. If you scored between 26-30 points, you have the attitude that will make you a valued employee in the twenty-first century.

Values of Employee’s in the Future Employee’s of the Twenty-First Century include: Embracing Technology Life-Long Learners Flexibility An International Perspective

Embracing Technology People who capitalize on the power of technology are amongst the most valuable workers. People at all job levels today are using a variety of technological accessories. From desktops to laptop, cell phone to iPhone /Android device, Kindle to iPad. These devices allow employees to be more productive and efficient.

Life-Long Love of Learning With a rapidly changing society, skills need to be updated frequently. A love of learning will not only keep you employable, but will also make you feel a part of the advances taking place around you.

Did You Know? Most of the jobs you will have in the future HAVE NOT EVEN BEEN INVENTED YET!!!!

Flexibility Remember that nothing is certain in life except change! You need to be able to cope with the changes that will come about! People who can embrace change and can live with some uncertainty are more likely to survive in today’s job market. Whole job industries change…..or go extinct! Constantly upgrading your skills will keep you marketable in the future job market.

An International Perspective McDonald’s restaurants are not only in the USA, they are all over the world! The world is becoming a smaller place due to businesses around the world entering a global marketplace. Those who can appreciate other cultures and understand the different economic systems around the globe, the future holds endless opportunities.

Attitude Need Changing?: Activity 245 Write some objectives (small goals that lead to your ultimate goal) that will help you on Activity 245.

Final Notes on Attitude “Whether we find pleasure in our work or whether we find it a bore depends entirely upon our mental attitude towards it, not up on the task itself.” B.C. Forbes If you are called to be a street sweeper, you should sweep streets even as Michelangelo painted, or Beethoven composed music, or Shakespeare wrote poetry. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Final Notes on Attitude “Others can stop you temporarily – you are the only one who can do it permanently.” Zig Ziglar “Whether you think you can or think you can’t, you’re right!” Henry Ford

Dave Ramsey Says… “Find successful people and do what they do!” Those who are successful with money, talk to them! Those who are successful in their marriage, talk to them! “You don’t want to find someone who is obese who gives you nutrition advice!”

Making Connections One thing successful people have had throughout their lives is help from others (Mentor). A mentor means, “Counselor or Teacher.” Neighbors, coaches, parents, co-workers, and others can be a mentor as well. Mentors give advice and, “show you the ropes.” Mentors save you time! They can give you advice to help you along your way…in other words…LEARN FROM THEIR MISTAKES AND SUCCESSES!

Making Connections Cont. Mentors can introduce you to people in the community or other successful people in the field. Remember….in life it sometimes is not WHAT you know, but WHO you know! Finally, mentors are there for your successes and failures.

Don’t Overstay Your Welcome! It’s never a good idea – or proper behavior – to be a pest or to force your attentions on anyone. Most people are willing to answer a question or offer information. Follow up with a thank you note. Perhaps a mentor relationship will develop…or not. Again, don’t push it!

It Just Comes Natural! The best mentor relationships develop naturally. If there is no friendship or rapport between the two people, the association won’t last.

Making Connections: Activity 263 Read the questions and answer the questions on Activity 263.
