Welcome to magnet night 5th GRADE

Typical flow of the day Specials first thing in the morning Recess 20 minutes per day Late lunch (students are encouraged to bring a healthy mid-morning snack)

Social/emotional learning Class meetings Growth mindset Leadership Service Collaboration Goal setting (self progress monitoring and individual data chats several times per year with teacher) Organizational skills

Language Arts Curriculum In depth novel studies Writing: preparation for FSA writes, teacher feed back, peer editing, informative, opinion, and narrative writing Vocabulary and Grammar instruction and practice Project based learning

Social Studies Curriculum U.S. History Integrated into Language Arts curriculum through the use of books and articles In class projects

Math Curriculum University of Chicago Everyday Mathematics Supplemented with: Big Ideas, Khan Academy, Prodigy, Sunshine Math Preparations for Pinellas Virtual School online 6th grade Math course

Science Curriculum Hands-on Science Labs Science research projects Reviewing Science concepts from 3rd and 4th grade

Enrichment Genius Hour: Student enrichment model (SEM) groups may include: creative arts, stem, coding, action research, service learning project, creative writing, etc. (once or twice per week for 45 mins)

Projects and field trips Field trips may include: Famous Figures in American History Science Fair SPIFFS Tampa Bay Watch Pinellas County Solid Waste Management RCS Food Bank Ybor Enterprise Village

School supply list for next year Basic needs list for all 5th grade magnet students will be supplied tonight A separate list for each homeroom teacher will be given at Meet the Teacher night in August and will be uploaded to our school’s website

Communication Newsletter via email or moodle site updated weekly Administration sends general happenings through weekly, automated phone/email Best form of communication from parent to teacher: EMAIL Return call/email within 48 hours End of year EP meeting for middle school goals At Ridgecrest, we value our partnership with parents and encourage frequent communication!

Homework expectations 1 hour total (or less) each night

grades Parents should be checking portal frequently and discussing grades with students Breakdown of grades will be discussed at open house ( tests, classwork, homework, etc.)

Summer enrichment Read, read, read! Practice math facts! See handout for specific suggestions!
