Convinced himself things were worse than they really were v14 3. Only solace found if trial is removed or removed from trial v4 God supplied help: - His word * command- “there's work to do” v15-16 [how many times would we be pulled out of the pit of despair if we will find others who seem to be deeper in that pit than we.] * success guaranteed v17 [Is 55:11 ever discouraged b/c 'do no good...'] - His providence v14 did Elijah know who Elisha was? No record (God tells him where he lives) - His people v18 despite the discouragement of the faithlessness of tens of thousands, Elijah could be encouraged by focusing his mind on the presence of the faithful few. v19 his successor, God will continue to have a prophet in Israel

David 2 Sam. 12 God supplied - His word Ps. 119:50, 74, 76, 105, 114, 116, 169, 170 - His providence v24, 26-31 - His people v17, 28 BiblePlaces.com

Jesus Lk. 22:39-45 God supplied - His word Lk. 24:44-45 - His providence Mk. 15:25; Mt. 27:45-50 - His people Lk. 22:43; 23:27; Jn. 19:25-26

How will I face discouragement? 1. Isolate myself? Find faithful friends? Comfort others ? 2. Lose hope of progress? Keep perspective? Look to the joy ahead? 3. Comforted only if trial removed? Worship during trial? “Thy will be done” or “My will be done”? He Himself has said, "I will never leave you nor forsake you." (Heb. 13:5) So whether we are in “a valley” due to “standing alone” for truth, personal tragedy, or at the hands of the wicked, how will we handle discouraging circumstances? - Give up and isolate ourselves, put ourselves in the company of faithful brethren, comfort others. - Convince ourselves that “all is lost,” patiently “get perspective,” look to joy that is ahead if we are faithful. - Find comfort: only in being removed from the trial, worship God in the midst of the trial, in God's will being done whatever that means for our life. - Trust that God has not left, nor forsaken us (Heb. 13:5). Be aware of the help He offers in His word, His providence, and His people. The greatest depressant ought to be our sin (Isa. 59:1-2). We need to be ashamed like Adam/Eve, feel hopeless and lost when outside of Christ, find rest- comfort- and peace in Christ and among His people.
