What is a MHP? Mental Health Practitioner Provides skills training to assist children develop skills that a child has lost or failed to develop because of their mental health disorder Works in Intensive Behavior classrooms to support mental health needs of students Provides individual and group skill training
Master’s degree in behavioral science field OR Qualifications of MHP Master’s degree in behavioral science field OR Bachelor’s degree and 2000 hours of supervised experience in delivery of mental health services of children OR 6000 hours of supervised experience in delivery of mental health services of children Minn.Stat. 245.462, Subd. 17
Learning Cohort Designed for those that are working on accruing hours of supervised experience to be eligible for MHP positions Will provide 30 hours of initial training, content will include: systems of support mental health services parent teaming discussion group/case consultation
Learning Cohort Training will be provided after the school day or on district days After the 30 hours of initial training is completed, participants will receive 2-4 hours of training per month
Assignment Individuals accepted into the learning cohort will remain in a paraprofessional position but will have the addition of training and clinical supervision There is no change in salary or benefits while in this position
Assignment The role of the paraprofessional in the MHP Learning Pathway is to work with students to practice or master skills that have been taught by the MHP and Teacher Job Duties may include: Cueing or prompting students Practicing or role-playing intervening and de-escalating behavior that puts the child at risk of injury
Commitments 2 year commitment of continued employment to RPS upon completion of the program is required All paraprofessionals are eligible to apply. If selected they must be willing to transfer into positions in our Intensive Behavior classrooms as positions become available
FAQs Do I have to be employed by Rochester Public Schools? Yes, this opportunity is available for those employed with RPS as a paraprofessional What if I am interested and I am not currently employed by RPS? Please visit the RPS website if you are interested in applying for paraprofessional positions
FAQs How long will it take me to complete the program? Depending on previous experience and education, it will take 2 to 5 years for those with a high school diploma
FAQs Is the learning cohort only available to special education paraprofessionals? No, all paraprofessionals employed by the district are eligible to apply
FAQs Am I guaranteed a position as a MHP? No. Upon completion of the program, you would have preference when candidates are selected for an interview, but hiring decisions are made based on the best fit for the position
FAQs Would this program qualify me to work as a MHP with another mental health provider? Yes, however you would have a commitment to continue employment with RPS for 2 years upon completion of the program
