World War II FDR wanted to join WWII but the public attitude toward war prevented him from doing so. That changes when Japan attacked Pearl Harbor. WWII was the largest and bloodiest war in all of world history.

African Americans in WWII About 1 million black men and women served in the armed forces The military remained segregated until 1948.

Most blacks were assigned to service and support positions. Benjamin O. Davis became the first African American general in the army

The Tuskegee Airmen Was a division of the Army Corps Got their name from Tuskegee Institute where they trained They escorted bombing missions and attacked enemy airfields, supply centers, and communication lines. In 2006, Congress voted to award the Tuskegee Airmen the Congressional Gold Medal, the highest honor congress can give.

Af Am Women in War In 1943, the Women’s Army Corps was created. Started as providing hospital services for black soldiers Tasks eventually expanded to lab technicians and librarians Phyllis Mae Daley became the first black woman in the Navy Nurse Corps.
